On January 17th, 1917, the United States bought the islands from Denmark for 25 million. This was done, in part, to avoid the islands falling into the hands of the Germans. The US Virgin Islands are located in the Caribbean sea and the Atlantic ocean about 50 miles each of Puerto Rico. The islands were named by Christopher Columbus in 1493 for St. Ursula and her virgins.
