We need a man to play JOE and a woman to play SOPHIE. These
two voices can be recorded separately and needn't be two
people who are in the same state, let alone the same room
while recording. But I do think it helps for "JOE" to
see "SOPHIE'S" part and visa versa while recording.
The style should be very quiet and subdued -- not a whisper,
but as quiet as one gets when thinking about such a
sensitive subject. Our viewers will just be eavesdropping.
The men and women who will be reading for us, will be
reading actual excerpts from two letters that were written
the day after Rita Jo Newman died in 1966. They are reading
the letters of a husband and wife who are both grieving the
loss, and celebrating the life of their child. This husband
and wife team, was instrumental in starting Logan Center
back in 1950.
Script below:
OPENING SCENE
DESCRIPTION
A simple graphic is faded onto the screen over black. It reads: 1966.
Viewers hear an angelic soundtrack. It's slow and plodding. The sound of
typing can be heard as the film dissolves up on slow sweeping moves across
photos of typewriter keys and various photos of a typewriter.
A simple graphic is displayed over the typewriter scene that reads:
"Hundreds of Local Families Present"
The typing sounds are now overlapping to create the sense that time is passing -- we're about to see the letters that have been written.
Voices start to fade in with the music. They are the mixed voices of Sophie and Joe Newman alternating back & forth. Their voices are soft. Emotional, but not too so. They are repeating the words they've written on the day after their daughter Rita Jo died. As they talk, the program title appears over the typewriter: BELIEVE.
SOPHIE: "The most wonderful possession my husband and I ever had…
was a little girl… named Rita Jo."

JOE: "Rita Jo was injured at birth… a severely retarded, cerebral
palsied child.
SOPHIE: "We did not know how long we could keep her,
because we knew that someday God would want her back"
JOE: "Even though she never walked or talked,
she filled our home,
and made us a family."
SOPHIE: "Many people believe that keeping and caring for such a
child at home is a mistake. But, it's not true.
We had a privilege that comes to few people;
That, of having an ANGEL in our home."
JOE: "We hear too frequently,
That people SO handicapped have no value and perform no
service to humanity.
It isn't true."
SOPHIE: "Our only wish was that she’d leave before we did,
And that she'd just close her eyes, and that would be it."
JOE: "Through Rita Jo, we became interested in the problems
of the mentally retarded, and took an active part in the creation
of Logan school.
SOPHIE: "I was bathing her at the time. And I didn't realize
what had happened. She just closed her eyes, and
left this earth to go back to God."

THIS IS WHERE THE BODY OF THE PROGRAM GOES. IT FEATURES AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT NARRATOR
CLOSING SCENE
DESCRIPTION
The camera fades back up on photos of the typewriter and the beautiful archival photo of Rita Jo Newman.
JOE: "Our daughter Rita Joe died yesterday, and to us, a simple obituary
will not do justice."
SOPHIE: "We never regretted a single day of the 28 years that she lived."
JOE: "Rita Jo, you did in YOUR way, serve humanity.
You taught love and understanding"
SOPHIE: "You molded our characters. Gave us insight and compassion
for others less fortunate… and an opportunity to DO something
about it."
JOE: "And though some people may have thought you were a burden,
you were OUR motivation.
Whatever we are today,
We are BETTER because you lived,
and OH so thankful,
that you were ours."
END PROGRAM
