Script for Mozart in Prague Rough Guide iToor
SFX: Radio Tuning
Radio DJ Voice very exaggerated as you would expect a typical rock DJ would be
Good Morning Prague!
You’re tuned into Radio 98.3: Prague’s favorite alternative station playing only the best alternative music from the 1700s.
First in today’s news.
Marie Antoinette has eaten her last cake. This morning radio 98.3 got official confirmation the French Revolutionaries looking across the pond for inspiration have successfully imitated their American cousins. As of 0800 hours this morning France is no longer ruled by a monarchy.
You need look no further for inspiration than the latest musical sensation to hit Prague. With a name like Wolfgang you’d better be good. He’s bold, he’s prolific and he can write a complete overture in a single night, he’s Mozart.
This voice should be a more professional, slightly commercial voice. Not commercial like a car commercial but like an NPR ad.
Marketing & Directions Voice
You’re listening to the Rough Guides iToor, Mozart in Prague. This iToor explores Mozart’s connection to Prague. You’ll visit the places he visited, stayed and performed. And of course where he sipped his libations in between librettos. En route, I’ll be pointing out places that have no specific connection to Mozart but which are worth visiting.
iToors are the world’s most listened-to travel podcasts. When you’re ready to visit more great cities, make sure www.itoors.com is your first destination. (Alex: Spell it out, i-t-o-o-r-s dot com).
This iToor was made possibly by the generous sponsorship of Czech Tourism, the national tourist board of the Czech Republic. To plan your next trip to Prague and beyond, visit www.Czechtourism.com.
And remember, wherever you're headed and whatever your budget, Rough Guides provides reliable destination information, travel do's and don'ts and insightful reviews on where to eat, drink and stay. You won't find a more useful companion to your trip than Rough Guides - available wherever books are sold. Visit www.roughguides.com to get detailed travel information
straight from Rough Guides books, plan your next trip, and share your
travel stories."
If you love classical music, you’re going to be spoiled for choice and if you’re a beer lover, well you might as well burn your return ticket. You’re never going to want to leave.
This iToor begins at the Municipal House at Nam. Republiky 5. Make your way there as I tell you a little about Mozart and Prague. By the way, at any time you can put me on pause or shut me off and go for a wander or a pint or something. As long as you don’t spill your Pilsner over your iPod, I’ll still be here when you get back!
BACKGROUND CONTEXT
Narrator: Very friendly, as if you are walking your best friend around town. You are really excited to see them and want to share your enthusiasm for the city you live. But it is genuine enthusiasm. You do not wan to sound like you are reading a script.
How many countries can you name that can claim any of the following, let alone all three:
FIRST
The people freed themselves from Communist oppression in a peaceful revolution where not a drop of blood was shed.
SECOND
A satirical playwright and civil rights campaigner was named President?
THIRD
A Frank Zappa concert was staged on the grounds of a 900 year old castle to celebrate the new freedom?
Yeah, you’d be hard pressed to come up with any answer other than one: the Czech Republic. That people of the country did not one or two but all three says they really know how to do things their own way.
Czechs, and especially Praguers, as Mozart calls them, are independent thinkers who have their own idea of what they like and what they don’t. They certainly don’t follow the crowd and they have a deep appreciation for others who don’t either. People like Vaclav Havel, Franz Kafka and Jan Hus—who you’ll hear about later—and of course Mozart.
This is no ordinary place and Mozart is no ordinary composer. So its little wonder he was drawn to Prague and the people of Prague embraced him with equal enthusiasm and love.
Mozart’s music was more innovative and more technically complex than many composers of the time. This is part of the reason he didn’t go over big in Vienna. Audiences there preferred more traditional and fasionable compositions. In Prague he was going down a storm: Praguers loved him and his music.
Following a cool Viennese reception for Don Giovanni, Mozart was defiant, declaring: My Praguers understand me!” With those words he effectively consummated a mutual love affair between himself and the Bohemian capital.
His funeral is the epitome of this contrast. Mozart died in 1791 at the age of 35. His funeral in Vienna was attended by friends and family you could just about count on 2 hands. Then he was buried in an unmarked grave.
In Prague, they held a funeral mass in the St. Nicholas Cathedral. Over 4,000 people attended, the considerably sized church was positively overflowing.
