THE PRMPC STORY
During the late 1960’s when civil strife was running rampant in the City of Pittsburgh, the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, a citizen group then twenty-five years old, which had played a key role in leading a program which is internationally known as “The Pittsburgh Renaissance”, began to reorient its programs away from an economic and physical rebuilding emphasis to economic and development programs with human interest.
The Conference created an Economic Development Committee in 1968, which was the forerunner of the Pittsburgh Business Resource Center. During the next five years, the Allegheny Conference on Community Development and its Economic Development Committee worked diligently with government, city, the business community, and the minority community, to make business opportunities available to minority business aspirants.
In 1972, start up monies became available through the Federal Government, to create Business Resource Centers, whose programs were similar to the Allegheny Conference on Community Development’s economic development program. The Business
Resource Center became what is know today as the Pittsburgh Regional Minority Purchasing Council (or PRMPC). The PRMPC is associated with the National Minority Supplier Development Council and its nationwide network of 50 regional councils.
Through its proven programs and networks, PRMPC helps MBEs develop strong business relationships with some of the region’s largest buyers of goods and services.
A basic assumption in all the programs established by the Council is that, in industrial sales, there is no substitute for the personal sales call. As can be seen, the majority of the Council’s programs intend to provide such contact.
Benefits to MBEs
Certification
PRMPC's primary function is to certify minority businesses. Our certification process qualifies MBEs as a legitimate Minority Owned and operated businesses.
MBE Loans - Business Consortium Fund (BCF)
The Business Consortium Fund is a source of working capital, providing loans from $10,000 to certified PRMPC members. All loans are made at approximately the prime interest rate.
Mentoring
PRMPC's mentoring programs center on an open, frank, and honest dialog between major corporations and minority-owned firms. Emphasis is placed on the development of the MBE by providing training and other resources that ensure business growth and success.
MBE Executive Scholarship
Scholarships of up to $4,500 are awarded to active members. Scholarship recipients attend the educational programs of their choice, strengthening their management and marketing skills or enhancing their position in the marketplace.
MBE-to-MBE Networking
PRMPC strongly encourages MBEs to buy products and services from each other. Minority business owners are expected to have the same commitment as PRMPC corporate members to supporting MBE development with their purchasing dollars.
Sales Seminar for MBEs
These seminars provide MBEs with comprehensive instruction and support as well as the expertise and philosophy that explore the critical elements for success in any anagement
situation.
PRMPC Business Opportunity Fair
This is western Pennsylvania's largest minority business development trade show. The event draws more than 100 corporate exhibitors and approximately 800 minority business representatives.
Meetings and Summits
The meetings include an update on the activites of the council as well as informative presentations from MBEs and corporations. The Quarterly Meetings are a major networking event for the minority and corporate business communities.
Annual Golf Outing
A PRMPC golf outing is held each year at two of Pittsburgh's premier country clubs. Early registration is encouraged. The day is a great way to entertain customers. It is a great way for minority business owners to network and become better acquainted with corporate decision makers in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
Many of the programs presented by the Council meet the objectives of both the MBE’s and the Corporate members simultaneously. For example, the MBENET computerized data base contains data on over 800 minority-owned businesses. Searching this data base for vendors in response to a request from a buyer not only identifies an MBE for the corporation, but at the same time, a likely buyer is identified for the MBE.
For more than 30 years, the Pittsburgh Regional Minority Purchasing Council (PRMPC) has been helping minority business enterprises (MBEs) in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia achieve success in the marketplace.
