Welcome to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Virtual Tour of a Drinking Water Treatment Plant. I’m Thirstin, and I will show up throughout the tour with Fun Facts about Quality and Safety, Cost, the Environment, and water in general.
Before we get started, here’s a question for you. Which of these statements below is the reason that we treat water before we drink it?
• Things are in it that you can see that may be unhealthy to drink.
• Things are in it that you can’t see that may be unhealthy to drink.
• Things are in it that may make the water smell or taste bad.
If you selected all three, you are right!
The water treatment plant that you will tour is designed to take river water and pass it through a series of treatment processes so that it is free of disease-causing organisms, any possible toxic substances, and should be fairly pleasing in appearance and odorless. These processes are typically Pretreatment and Screening, Coagulation, Flocculation, Sedimentation, Filtration and Disinfection.
The water coming from this facility must be safe and potable drinking water. It’s the law!
Now to get you started, let’s say hello to your Tour Guide.
• Only one percent of all the water on earth is fresh and accessible to us, and most of that is ground water. The rest is either saltwater or glacier ice. We do not have the technology to cheaply turn that 99 percent into drinkable water whenever it is needed.
• Records show that King Tut likely drank clear water because although the Nile is cloudy, the Egyptians were using alum to settle out suspended particles in the turbid Nile River water three thousand, five hundred years ago. Few technologies have been in use for so long a time. 7
• Combined water and sewer bills average only about one half of one percent of household income.9 And while some would argue that we could live without say, our phone service, no one could dispute the fact that humans can survive without water for only about a week, maximum. 10
 As early as 400 B.C., Hippocrates, the father of medicine, recommended boiling water and straining it through cloth to remove particles.
• Our source waters today are very different from the pure water the earth started with. For centuries human activity has adversely affected all waters, a trend that rapidly accelerated in the Twentieth Century. But drinking water disinfection has been one of the Twentieth Century’s greatest public health advances. It saves hundreds of thousands of lives every year and reduces the risk of illness for everyone.
• If you lay all the water distribution pipelines and aqueducts in the U.S. and Canada end to end, you would circle the earth forty times! Think of the jet lag you would experience on such a trip! 15
• The typical water tower holds the same amount of water as fifty in-the-ground – big – swimming pools. That’s up to 1.5 million gallons!!16
Everyday, the government, public health community and water utilities throughout the country work together to safeguard the nation's drinking water supplies, providing clean, safe and affordable water. But you, too, have a role to play in keeping our water clean. So do your part to protect water for life. For ideas, check out the web resources on this CD.
This concludes our tour of a water treatment plant. You can either view the Water Treatment Plant Tour again or visit one of the other sections on the CD by Clicking on the Main Navigation Control Panel or using the keyboard commands. To see and hear the keyboard commands please press the K key.
Please send demo.
