Meet Alice. (long pause) Alice is just one of the many people whose life has come in contact with Catholic Heart Work Camp through their mission to serve communities with hope and love by repairing and painting homes.
At the age of 84, multiple strokes have left Alice with a speech impediment, and a hip injury has made it difficult for her to walk. She lives alone, tending to her garden as best she can from her wheelchair, but the upkeep on her house has become a task she cannot fully perform.
When a group of high school students from Catholic Heart Work Camp showed up to Alice’s home, they thought they were just there to paint a house,… but what followed was much more than they could have ever expected.
For Alice, attitude is everything… She is constantly reminding those around her of the values and lessons she has learned in life.
Alice carries a notebook around with her; taped to the cover is a worn piece of paper that reads: “You can make a difference everyday.” These aren’t clichés, but truth’s that Alice holds dear to her heart, because she too has lived a life of serving others.
As Alice’s house came together, so did the relationships between her and the Students.
When asked about the impact this has made in her life, Alice said that all the kids were a blessing to her... She said she couldn’t believe how helpful they were…. That they would come from all over the country to help fix up her house.
In only a few days, the simple act of painting and serving had produced at bond between Alice and the students that would not soon be forgotten.
On the final night of camp, Alice was able to come thank the students for the work done on her house. This was more than a time of appreciation; it was a time to celebrate the friendship that had formed over the last few days.
While painting Alice’s house at Catholic Heart Work Camp, one can’t be sure who received the greater blessing… Alice… or those who came to serve…
In just a week’s time, an old home was made new, as were the lives of those connected to it.
