NARRATOR (v.o.): If you want to know what it's like living Downeast, you won’t have to look much farther than our coastline… or for that matter, right out this window. The tides that roll up and down the Gulf of Maine can tell you a lot about the daily activities of many creatures who calls this place ' home.' Some of those activities are pretty sophisticated… And some are pretty basic… and each starts with the tides. According to the Passamaquoddy elders, long ago a giant whale angered the Great Chief Glooscap by making such a splash with his tail that the water north of Maine still sloshes back and forth to this day… The science of that sloshing is as powerful as the lore. From geological maps, you can see that the Bay of Fundy, off the coast of New Brunswick, connects to the Gulf of Maine in a system that's bounded by a huge continental shelf, with deep undersea valleys known as "rifts". When Atlantic tides enter and exit this "sea within a sea", water levels rise and fall dramatically. Add to that the pull of the sun and the moon, and you can see why our region has some of the mightiest ocean-action in the world.
