Sample script :
People have lived and farmed in this area for some three thousand years – for late Bronze Age items have been found, as have items from the Iron Age that followed. At least one Roman house was built here – and names ending in ‘ing’ – such as Cressing – often point to the existence of an early Anglo-Saxon settlement. But Cressing was put firmly on the map in 1137, when it was given to the order of the Knights Templars by Queen Matilda, the wife of King Stephen, and from then on it was farmed by and on behalf of the knights, eventually becoming known as Cressing Temple. Any place with Temple in its name nearly always has some connection with the Knights Templars.
They were warrior monks, who guarded pilgrims as they travelled to the Holy Land and who played a leading role in the Crusades. They had taken a vow of poverty, chastity and obedience and wore a white tunic emblazoned with a red cross. But despite their vows they became increasingly rich and powerful – and in 1312 the order was suppressed and their possessions confiscated.
