1.3 Western Religions focus both on Mankind’s relationship with God and Mankind’s relationship with itself. That relationship with God, introduces the concept of, and the need for, Salvation. Salvation is, to varying degrees, a key part of the relationship Mankind has with God in Western Religions. Within monotheistic religions the idea of Salvation – a return to God’s Presence and Friendship (Heaven) – falls somewhere along a spectrum where on one end Salvation is earned by obedience to God’s Law (Judaism and Islam) to the other end, where Salvation is a wholly unmerited and undeserved Gracious Act of God (Reformation/Calvinist/Puritan Theology). In between are most of the Christian Churches/Denominations.
2.5 Islam and Conquest (Animated Map)
In 630 A.D. Muhammad and his religious army fought to take control of Mecca from its Arab government and people. Within a year Muhammad unified most all the nomadic and Semite tribes of the Arabian Peninsular under the Islamic religion; most often by force or the threat of force.
After consolidating their power after Muhammad’s death, the Muslim leadership began a conquest of the Mid-East and Northern Africa. (This happened c. 635 – 700 AD.) From this power base Muslim invaders moved into Southern Europe through the Iberian Peninsula, (This invasion was stopped at Tours, France c. 732 AD.), and as far east as present day Afghanistan. (750 A.D)
2.6 The Christian Crusades (Animated Map)
The first Christian Crusade began around 1096 when the Roman Catholic Pope, Urban II, endorsed such a military undertaking. While there are complex and sophisticated reasons behind all the Crusades, religious zeal and greed are the most clear and least disputed.
The first Crusade was filled with battles, intrigue, brutality, religious hostility, and ultimate triumph as Jerusalem was retaken in 1099.
The second through the ninth Crusade – including the Children’s Crusade were in essence a continuous stream of European Christians with various motives, ranging from sincere religious convictions to “do good” and rescue the Holy Land and other Christians, to wholly selfish, greedy opportunists, to criminals and soldiers of fortune.
