I was a canal kid, long ago. One of my favorite memories of canawlin' days was the "food."
W. WENTWORTH: Yes sir! We kids had plenty to eat, and we helped with the cookin' and shoppin' too.
W. WENTWORTH: Sometimes mother would have us hop off the boat to buy fresh fruits and vegetables from canal side farm stands, and even from locktenders. They'd sell you stuff they grew, right from their own gardens.
W. WENTWORTH: There were also plenty of canal-side stores in Lockport, Gasport, Pittsford and all up and down the canal that sold pots 'n pans and just about everythin' a canawlin' family needed.
W. WENTWORTH: Mother did all our cookin' on a wood burnin' stove in the cabin. She'd make pies and cakes on occasion that was real tasty. But those canal-side stores had their own treats as well.
W.WENTWORTH: I 'member one store, right by a lock near Utica, that was my Dad's favorite. Every trip we'd pass by there, he'd stop off to get somethin' good. One time, he went and bought a couple of pounds of fresh molasses cookies.
W. WENTWORTH: When he come back, he put those cookies in a big glass jar in the cabin. My brother and me was doin' our studies, pretendin' not to notice. But, Dad came right over to us and said, "Now, boys, them cookies is for after-dinner dessert. Remember, dessert!" Then he went back to work, steerin' the boat.
W. WENTWORTH: Now, the cabin was in the stern of the boat where my Dad couldn't see. So, when he got to steerin', my brother and me got to schemin'…
W. WENTWORTH: "Them cookies look mighty good," says I. " How's 'bout we snitch a couple?" My brother wasn't so sure. "Nuh-uuh!," says he. "Dad's liable to find us and, ifen he does, we'll catch the devil."
W. WENTWORTH: But, there I was, the older 'n wiser brother sayin', " Easy now, I got it all figgered out." So, we took some papers and we crumbled 'em up. Then, we took a dozen cookies out of the jar and stuffed the papers under the rest.
W. WENTWORTH: (sighing) Yeah, you're right. It didn’t work. Dad found out, and like my brother warned, we caught heck for it.
W.WENTWORTH: Before he died, I reminded Dad of that little cookie incident. He said, " You remember what you got for it?" And, I said, "Yeah, and I still feel it today!" (chuckling) Still, it was some fun bein' a canal kid. And food was a big part of it.
