B. HOLLY: Now, that is the sweetest sound heard in Lockport. The sound of machinery for building pumps and mains that will help save our city, and hundreds more from future destruction.
B. HOLLY: Hello, I am Birdsill Holly, founder and president of Holly Manufacturing, Lockport's foremost shop for invention put-to-practical-use.
B. HOLLY: My boyhood heroes were canal engineers, men of ideas and initiative. They had no formal training. But that didn't stop them from using their ingenuity. Why, just look at our magnificent "Flight of Five" locks!
B. HOLLY: Years ago, those locks brought me here to Lockport. I figured that if the excess water from this mighty staircase could be brought to practical use, it could power local industry!
B. HOLLY: So, I bought land across from the locks and built my "hydraulic raceway," an underground tunnel that uses water-power to drive machinery here at Holly Manufacturing and at other factories nearby.
B. HOLLY: Today, the Holly System of Direct Water Supply, with its pumps, hydrants and underground mains, provides thousands of cities, towns and villages the water to fight fires.
B. HOLLY: In our busy canal town, we've new ideas everyday, important ideas. Like my plans for tall buildings to be erected in bustling cities like New York, Boston and Philadelphia. Buildings that will scrape the sky! Building that will be heated centrally, with my new steam heating system.
B. HOLLY: Yes, Lockport has become a center of ingenuity and progress. If you have an inventive mind, and a desire to see your hard work benefit your fellow man…well, consider an apprenticeship here at Holly Manufacturing. Soon, you too could be building America's future!
