A major announcement now regarding leadership succession at one of Ireland’s major financial institutions.
Eugene Sheehy, a banking executive with more than 30 years experience, has been named Group Chief Executive D. He will become Chief Executive of the company when the retirement of current ceo Michael Buckley takes effect.
Mr. Sheehy is returning to AIB -- where he has spent the bulk of his career -- from his present position as Chairman and CEO of the Mid-Atlantic Division of (company name) in the US.
Joining AIB in 1971, Mr Sheehy rose through the management ranks. In 1992 he was given responsibility for the overall Change Programme in the Retail Network and led implementation of the new Branch Banking System.
In 1999 he was appointed General Manager of Retail Operations. In 2001 he became Managing Director of AIB Bank in the Republic of Ireland. And in 2002 he was named Chief Executive of AIB’s USA Division.
Mr. Sheehy has served the industry as a founding Board member of the Irish Payments Services Organisation and president of the Institute of Bankers in Ireland.
Group Chairman Dermot Gleeson said the board had a difficult task in choosing the right successor to a chief executive of Michael Buckley’s caliber. Numerous external and internal candidates were considered.
Factors that led to Sheehy’s selection included his wide ranging experience both inside and outside the company, said Mr. Gleeson, particularly his three years at the highest levels of one of the most successful banks in the US.
In welcoming Mr. Sheehy back to (company name)on behalf of the entire board, Chairman Gleeson said: I know that he is more than equal to the challenges ahead.
