YesN/A OS9 Navigation Macy: Hello! Let me show you how to identify the operating system in the Classic interface. I have walked many Members through these steps. First, click on the Apple in the upper left hand corner. From the menu that drops down, select About This Computer. The About This Computer screen identifies the operating system and the version. 10. Simulation OSX Navigation Macy: To access the ‘About this Mac’ window in OSX, you do the same thing that we showed you in OS9. I'll let you try it this time. Let's see how well you remember the process. Check the bottom panel for hints. 4. OS9 Dial-up Settings Macy: Let’s get started with the dial-up settings in OS9. We need to open the Remote Access window. You do the navigating. Check the bottom panel for hints. 5. Network Connections Macy: This is where the dial-up network connection settings are stored. Next, let's look at these settings. 6. Registered User Macy: In the Remote Access window, verify that Registered User is selected. 7. Member Name Macy: The SBC Yahoo! Member ID should be in the Name field. 8. Password Entry Macy: The member's password should be in the Password field. Passwords are confidential and are represented by a series of dots. The password can be saved by placing a check in the Save Password check box. 9. Access Number Macy: The SBC Yahoo! Services access number should be in the Number field. Remember that a "9" must be included if it is needed for a dial-out line. Now let's look at the setting under the Options button. 10. Remote Access Options Macy: You need to be familiar with a few of the settings in the Options window. From the Remote Access window, click the Options button. On the Protocol tab, make sure that the Use Protocol drop-down list is set to PPP. The middle 2 checkboxes, Error Correction and TCP header compression, should be selected. The top checkbox is optional; we recommend leaving it unchecked. The Connection and Redialing tabs contain additional configuration choices that should be left in their default setting. 11. OSX Dial-up Settings Macy: Now that you've seen how this is done with OS9, let's take a look at how we would do the same thing in the OSX. Again, let's have you do the navigating. Check the bottom panel for hints. 12. Network Panel Macy: Once in the Network Panel, have Members select New Location from the Location drop-down menu. Have them name the new location something meaningful. The name is not critical. Then have them click OK. From the Show menu, have them select Internal Modem. From the PPP tab, have Members type their Member ID, password and local POP number. Be sure to have Members check Save Password. Now have Members click the Options button. The suggested settings are shown. After checking the option settings, have Members click the OK button. 5. OS9 TCP/IP Macy: Now we’re going to access the TCP/IP settings. This is similar to accessing the Remote Access settings. You do the navigating again. Check the bottom panel for hints. 6. OS9 Settings Macy: When you help Members configure a dial-up connection, the most important thing to check in the TCP/IP window is that it is configured to connect via PPP. The PPP stands for Point to Point Protocol. The connection also has to be set to configure Using the PPP Server. This means the server configures the IP address, subnet mask and Router addresses once the Member is connected. 7. OSX TCP/IP Macy: Now find the TCP/IP settings in OSX. You do the navigation. Check the bottom panel for hints. 8. OSX Settings Macy: Let's review the current Domain Name System, or DNS, server information. Verify that the text boxes for DNS Servers and Search Domains are empty. The empty text boxes allow DNS information to be automatically sent because the DNS settings are server-assigned. 4. OS9 Modem Macy: First, let's verify what modem script is set. To do this, access the Modem window through the Control Panel. You do the navigating. Check the bottom panel for hints. 5. OS9 Settings Macy: This window shows us why the Member is experiencing such a slow connection. The wrong modem is set. Let's change it. You do the navigating. Check the bottom panel for hints. 6. OS9 Connect Macy: So far in this lesson, you have looked at a number of settings in the Macintosh OS9 dial-up. You have verified: • Remote Access and Option settings • TCP/IP settings • Modem settings. You can now direct Members to test the modem connection. Test the modem connection through the Remote Access window. When the Member clicks the Connect button, the connection completes and the button changes to Disconnect. 7. OSX Modem Macy: Verifying the modem script in OSX is similar to OS9. Let's access the Modem tab in the Network window to verify the settings. You do the navigating. Check the bottom panel for hints. 8. OSX Settings Macy: You need to verify the settings are as shown on this Modem tab. It is important the ‘Show modem status’ in the menu bar is checked. 9. OSX Proxies Macy: Now verify the settings of one last tab. Check the bottom panel for hints. 10. OSX Connect Macy: So far in this lesson, you have looked at a number of settings in the Macintosh OSX dial-up. You have verified: • PPP tab settings • TCP/IP tab settings • Modem tab settings • Proxies tab settings. You can now direct Members to test the connection. To test the connection, the Member selects Connect from the Modem status menu. It takes about 30 seconds to authenticate. Remind Members to use the Modem status menu to disconnect the connection. 11. Configuring the PPPoE Software Macy: Although you provide dial-up support, the following information should prove helpful in your overall understanding of networking. There are times when Members need assistance configuring the Macintosh OSX PPPoE client. This type of connection is required for Members who do not have a 5100b modem. Let's consider what is needed to connect to the Internet. For OSX, there is a need to create a DSL connection profile in the PPP client software that contains the Member's SBC Yahoo! Member ID and password. The PPP software uses this profile to authenticate the Member's DSL connection. Let's look at how you would help the Member through this process. You do the navigating. Check the bottom panel for hints. 12. OSX Configuring Simulation Macy: From the Network window, select New Location from the Location menu. Name the location something simple so it is easily remembered, like SBC DSL. Select Built-in Ethernet from the Show menu to designate how the connection is made to the Internet. Click the PPPoE tab. • Make sure Connect using PPPoE is checked. • Enter SBC Internet Services in the Service Provider field. • Enter the Member ID in the Account Name field. • Enter the password in the Password field. OSX saves passwords by default, so if the Member does not want the password saved, have the Member uncheck Save password. Remember that passwords are case sensitive. If the password is entered incorrectly, OSX does not generate an error message and doesn’t access the Internet. Now, click the PPPoE Options button. A panel with connection options slides out. Under the Session Options, make sure the option to connect automatically is checked. The other Session Option choices are optional. Under Advanced Options, Send PPP echo packets should be checked. Click OK. Click Apply Now to save your changes, then close the window. 13. Access the Internet Macy: Test Internet access by opening an Internet application, such as a Web browser. If the Member continues to have issues accessing Web sites or receiving e-mail, additional steps may be necessary. Let's take a look. You do the navigating. Check the bottom panel for hints. 14. OSX Ping Macy: Doing a ping is a helpful OSX activity. Ping refers to a command which sends out an echo request to any network addressable host. If the host is there, it will echo back; therefore verifying the connection to the host. It can be useful for determining whether a host is on the internet and running. If no ping replies are received, more troubleshooting is needed. Next we'll take a look at how this is done. 15. OSX Ping Simulation Macy: Double click the hard-drive icon at the top right screen corner. The name of the drive may vary. Double-click the Applications icon. Double-click the Utilities icon. Double-click the Network Utility icon. When the Network Utility window comes up, click on the Ping tab. Enter the IP address or domain to ping. Click the Ping button. The ping starts and completes within 10 pings. The Member can read off the results from the display box.
