(1) What is an historic landmark but a placeholder for a story—a reminder of a time, the people, and ideas that shaped it; and what role does location play on a culture? The Shawnee Indian Mission stands today as a monument to not just one story, but a place and a time where multiple stories overlapped. In the uncertain climate of the mid-1800’s this tract of land sat directly on a fault line of American history—a place where people were bound to cross, and converging viewpoints were bound to clash.
(2) By 1838, dissatisfied with the school’s functioning, Johnson proposed a new concept: Build a central school to serve many tribes that would now include manual arts instruction. A site was chosen near Westport, Missouri, and branches of the Santa Fe and Oregon-California Trails. - - The new mission opened at its present location in October 1839. Here, Indian children from more than 20 tribes, ranging in age from five to 23, were sent to learn basic academics, agriculture, manual arts, and Christian ways. Yearly enrollment ranged between 15 and 150 students, but The Shawnee Indian Mission was more than a school.
