On every continent, important sites of world heritage can be seen today. These sites are irreplaceable treasures, and the most visible record the human experience.
International initiatives have played an important role in the preservation of World Heritage Sites.
In 1929 the Samuel H. Kress Foundation began funding the restoration of heritage sites in Italy, followed by sites elsewhere in Europe.
In 1956 ICCROM, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, was established by UNESCO to improve the quality of conservation practice.
