Built and decorated by Bartolomeo Bon between 1438 and 1442, the Porta della Carta is a perfect example of “Flamboyant Gothic.” From its symmetrical arrangement of sculptures of the Virtues, Temperance and Fortitude and Prudence and Charity, attributed to Antonio Bregno, to its arched window, matching spires, bust of St. Mark, and capped with a statue of Justice, this is, as the Latin inscription reads, an opus bartholmei, or a masterpiece of Bartolomeo Bon's.
Just above the cornice or ledge above the door, there is a sculpture of Francesco Foscari, the doge at the time of its completion, kneeling before Venice's prime symbol, the winged lion of St. Mark After 1032; the doge was no longer a hereditary position, but rather one of election. As will be explained later in great detail, the doge possessed no absolute power. He was subjected to many layers of government and he had to be respectful of Venetian law at all times, thus
Doge Foscari is on his knees before the symbol of the city. Many of the original statues here were destroyed in the Napoleonic takeover of 1797, and what you see are copies. Turn to your left to view the four Moors, a small grouping of red knights. (middle eastern music)
On your left as you face the Porta della Carta is the small grouping of red knights carved from porphyry, a purplish red volcanic rock. Who are they? No one knows for sure, though it is probable they were taken from Syria. Note that the friendliness of their embraces does not match the looks in their eyes or the grasps on their sword hilts. Some say that St. Mark appeared to these enemies of the state and turned them to stone. Another legend has them as a group of Moors or Arabs who stole from the city's treasury and ended up killing each other after a squabble over the loot. Still another legend suggests four brothers, not Venetian of course, who pair off over a stolen cargo and simultaneously poison each other, leaving their riches for Venice herself. It is also possible, and more than likely, that they are four Roman Emperors, Diocletian, Maximian, Galerious and Constantius, embracing each other to signify the unity of the Empire.
