United States, California,
After World War II, migration to California, housing shortages, and skyrocketing real-estate values threatened to bring urban sprawl to Orange County. But the Irvine Company held fast to its original vision. The Ranch was something special. Its sheer size and natural beauty would never be seen again. This land had to be developed responsibly, deliberately. The long-term needs of future generations could not be sacrificed to short-term profit.
This goal -- to do something great with the 93,00 acres of Irvine ranchland -- preoccupied company leaders like Ray Watson, who became chief planner in 1960. He found a kindred spirit in the master architect William Pereira, a devoted reader of science fiction who spent his career designing buildings equally suited to the present and the future.
Together they embarked on a series of projects that shaped Orange County as we know it. A campus was created on 1,000 acres of land, given to the University of California by the Irvine Company. 50,000 acres of magnificent fields, canyons, and trails were designated for conservation, their unspoiled beauty and recreational value preserved in perpetuity. Business centers were carefully constructed to meet the needs of the state's most dynamic companies. Most importantly, the City of Irvine grew in accordance with a "go-slow" approach, ensuring that a high quality of life would keep pace with development.
These values are the legacy of the Irvine Company, a legacy that James Irvine would view with pride. Today's leadership continues his tradition of foresight. The land he looked upon in 1864 will endure far into the future, providing space and sustenance for generations to come.
Land. Legacy. Life. For today. For tomorrow.
Let the next 150 years begin.
