VO: Advances in imaging technology utilizing highly miniaturized cameras and transmitters has opened opportunities to see inside the gastro intestinal tract unlike ever before. It is now possible to image the entire 21 feet of the small intestine using a non-invasive procedure. The small bowel is an area unreachable by traditional upper endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures.
VO: The Given Imaging M2A capsule endoscopy system utilizes a capsule that is the size of a multi-vitamin. The capsule houses a sub-miniature video camera, LED light, transmitter and battery. The patient swallows the disposable imaging unit with a sip of water. The capsule moves naturally through the GI tract over a period of about 8 hours taking 60 thousand high resolution images at the rate of 12 images per second. The images are transmitted to a hard drive recorder, which is attached to a belt worn comfortably by the patient as they go about their day. After the capsule has made its way through the GI tract, the patient returns the hard drive recorder to the hospital where the data is downloaded to a dedicated computer for analysis.
VO: Capsule endoscopy is particularly helpful for diagnosing Crohn’s disease, obscure anemia and tumors in small bowel.
VO: Capsule endoscopy is not suited for examining the esophagus, stomach or lower intestine, where the capsule tends to tumble. This procedure does not take the place of upper and lower endoscopy.
VO: With current applications for a variety of gastro-intestinal disorders and future applications for suspected blood indication and accurate localization within and beyond the small bowel, capsule endoscopy expands the scope of GI.
