Oscar Finds A Home

The morning sun began to shine and Oscar, the delightful dachshund woke up happy. Today was Adoption Day at the K-9 Shelter! That’s the day when all the people who want a dog come to adopt one. (page 1)

Oscar’s friends were excited. There was George, the giant German Shepherd [sound of his bark), Penny, the petite Poodle [sound of her bark], Dave the daring Dalmatian [sound of his bark], (page 2)
and Yo-Yo, the yappy Yorkshire Terrier [sound of his bark – high-pitched and prolonged: “Yip yap yip yap OK, OK, Ok! …]. Oscar liked Yo-Yo best, but he had to admit that Yo-Yo talked just a little too much! (page 3)

Because it was adoption day at the K-9 Shelter, all the dogs were putting their best paws forward hoping that they might be picked first. Oscar was worried. It seemed that he was always the last one picked for anything. (page 4)

As the Shelter gates opened at 9 o’clock in the morning, a tall, tough policeman marched in. He looked at all the dogs when suddenly, George, the giant German Shepherd, puffed out his chest, and marched around his cage. The policeman said, “Oh, how manly -- that’s the dog for me!” (page 5)

Next, a dainty little lady tip-toed in. Oscar had an idea. He puffed out his chest and marched around his cage— just like George. (page 6)
But as the lady looked at all the dogs, Penny, the petite poodle, stood on her hind legs and tip-toed just like a ballerina. The lady said, “Oh, how dainty -- that’s the dog for me!” (page 7)

Soon after, a brave, strong fireman dashed in. Oscar had another idea! He stood up on his hind legs and began to tip-toe around as daintily as he could— just like Penny. (page 8)
But as the fireman looked at all the dogs, Dave, the daring Dalmatian, dashed around and jumped up high, touching the top of his cage. Immediately, the Fireman said, “Oh, how daring -- that’s the dog for me!” (page 9)

Now, Oscar was beginning to worry. All the dogs were going home….except for Oscar and Yo-Yo. Oscar turned to his best friend and said, “How come we’re the only ones left?” Yo-Yo answered: “yip, yip, yip, yap, yap, yap.” Unfortunately, most of the time it was quite difficult to understand just what Yo-Yo was saying. (page 10)
At that very moment, a pretty little girl skipped in, holding her father’s hand. Oscar had just one more idea. He dashed around and jumped up high— just like Dave. (page 11)
But the little girl seemed puzzled, and looked at Yo-Yo -- who started to yap again. “Yip, Yip, Yip, yap, yap, yap” … on and on and on. The little girl burst out laughing, and said to her father, “See, Daddy – I knew we could find a great watchdog! Now, we will always know when someone is at our door!” (page 12)
Sadly, Oscar sat alone and wondered, “Why doesn’t anyone ever want me?” (page 13)
As the guard was closing the shelter for the night, a little boy ran into the K-9 Shelter with his mother and father trailing behind. Feeling sad and lonely, Oscar was out of ideas; he just sat in his cage and did nothing. He didn’t even open his eyes. (page 14)
Curiously, the little boy knelt down in front of Oscar’s cage and quietly said, “Hi, I’m Joey, what’s your name? “ Oscar didn’t even answer. (page 15)
Joey pressed his nose up to the cage and looked at Oscar’s collar. “Oh, your tag says Oscar. I like that name!” Slowly, Oscar opened one eye and then the other. (page 16)
“Well, Oscar,” Joey smiled, “it looks like you’re the last one left. I sure know how THAT feels. “ (page 17)

All of a sudden, Oscar sat up, stuck out his tongue, and tried to give Joey a big wet lick!! (page 18)
Joey clapped and giggled, and turned to his mom and said, “Oh, Mom, Oscar’s the dog for me!!”

Delighted that Joey had found his new, best friend, his parents smiled and said, “It’s like we’ve always told you, Joey, THE BEST IS SAVED FOR LAST!” (page 19)
