Jill: Sure. What’s up, Paula? Did you forget your password again?
Paula: No not today. (haha) I wanted to talk to you about your patient experience scores. The data and the comments from the surveys are telling me that you are not communicating well enough with your patients.
Jill: What are the comments saying?
Paula: They’re saying things like you are never in the patient rooms for very long and when you are you’re not doing a good job of explaining things like medications and discharge instructions to patients.
Jill: Well if I had more time I would love to, but the reality is that I can barely keep my head above water. Between paperwork, staff meetings, training and other responsibilities I am usually in a rush to get in and out of a patient’s room – especially those patients that are doing well and don’t need as much attention from me.
Paula: We’ve talked about hourly rounding and have initiated this program to make patients feel like we are spending more time with them and explaining things more clearly. Have you been doing hourly rounding?
Jill: If I could I would. It’s just not realistic. How can I spend a few minutes in each patient’s room every hour AND get all of my other responsibilities done? There’s not enough hours in the day. I think the problem is that we don’t have enough staff. If the nurse to patient ratio was better we’d all have more time to sit and talk with patients.
