Voice Description
For audio books, I tend to read expressively with whichever emotion suits the text at hand: slow and mournful during the sad parts, fast and furious for the angry and shocking parts, even and cool for the clever parts, and so forth. I'm especially good at the "tired and irritable bureaucrat" voice as well as sounding bored, grumpy, hostile, etc. (I think my voice particularly resembles that of Ben Stein in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, HAL in 2001, Agent Smith from The Matrix, and Duke Nukem in Duke Nukem 3D.)

My Voice Experience
Technically, the only time I ever actually got paid for using my voice was at a law firm, where I had the unenviable task of transcribing the headings for 14,000 pages of material to microtape. Some friends from my local homeschooling organization (of which I am an alumnis) did ask me to do a demo recording for a potential audio version of a new book for children they were trying to get published back in 2005. (I don't know what has become of that venture since then. I've heard nothing more of it.) They said they liked my voice and found it very distinctive. Others have thought so as well and suggested that I seek out voice acting work, but such is not very widely available here in North Carolina. I hope to find some financial value in my voice here, as it is one of my more easily transmitted talents.
My Training
I am mostly self-trained. Interestingly, I find that speaking in front of a vast impersonal audience is easier than speaking to a small audience; the feeling that the larger audience is "impersonal" is what makes this easy. I can openly say all kinds of things when I feel I'm talking to complete strangers that I would never dare to say when talking to an intimate group of acquaintances.

Additional Skills
As I say, I like fitting my reading style to the subject at hand. The fine art of matching the emotional tone of one's words to the emotional tone of an artwork or narrative is something I learned while doing a little freelance matching of songs to clips from movies and cartoons. My transcription job also taught me how to speak clearly.
