Voice Description

Deep and a little husky at times, from sexy to monotone, to a little high strung. I very much enjoy wordless vocalizations. I am well suited for recorded announcements (think city transportation systems), instructional and documentary narration, strange accents or vocal effects. I am interested in using the voice in unconventional ways. I'm an avid listener and observer, with a good ear for nuances.

My Voice Experience

My public voice experiences really started in radio; being a host for college freeform music programs and also engineering public affairs programs and producing public service announcements; doing narratives for a friend or personal film/video project; having my voice utilized on occasion for sound design by co-workers (sounds to match the slurping of shrimp cocktails, screaming blood curds for a band, subdued readings for short films, recorded voice message system menus and greetings).

My Training

My background is primarily in the visual arts, with photography/film/video/sound being a big part of my life. Most of my experience related to sound engineering and production have come through working in multimedia environments, on a personal level with music and visuals, and early on at sound post-production facility where I learned about foley, ADR, mastering, field recordings, and custom effects.

My Studio Equipment

I am Mac based and PC proficient. I primarily use Adobe Soundbooth and Peak Pro; a modest mix board and a shure MS57 mic; I also like Zoom's H4 multitrack digital recorder for field/live/instrumental recordings.
*I like to keep various sound makers near, like percussive and stringed instruments and objects, 2-track Revox reel-to-reel, analog synthesizers, etc. Have access to additional gear, microphones, recording space if necessary.

Additional Skills

Over the years, my interests and activities led me to work with film and sound archives, and today I'm a DIY archivist managing digital preservation of audio and visual recordings for a non-profit arts org. I study, attend and present at related conferences and am versed on current practices and discussions regarding the preservation of sound recordings and moving images. So perhaps I could be of help, directly or indirectly in that area.
