Voice Description

I've never been one of those guys with a deep, "radio announcer" type voice. But, heck, that sort of thing went out with AM radio anyway! What I DO have is a lot of expression in my voice. I know how to get a point across cleanly and sell it! I think my best voice over work is done when the script is written in a conversational style. In other words, when it sounds like I am carrying on a conversation with the listener.

In my earlier days, I had more of the "excitable guy" type of voice. (I usually sound younger than I am.) Now, my voice has mellowed to an extent, but still provides a youthful feel.

My Voice Experience

I have always been a broadcaster. From my early youth, I wanted to be on the radio or TV. When most boys wanted to be Johnny Unitas or Bart Starr, I wanted to be Bob Barker or Gene Rayburn!

I worked at the campus radio station in college where I did everything from commercial production to building transmitters! My voice was used in station promos and commercials there.

I worked for several years in small market radio, where I did voice over work in commercials. I did a disc jockey show and radio news, then eventually got involved with broadcast engineering. Now, I am a television broadcast engineer, but never went too far from radio, having worked in non-commercial radio and doing disc jockey and voice over work with my friends that are still in the business.

My Training

I am a Communications Arts graduate, with an emphasis in Radio, TV and Film from the University of Wisconsin. The course there included local radio production and writting.

My stint in radio included news and public affairs productions.

I enjoy music editing and use Sony Sound Forge on my home computer to edit music and recordings.

Another of my interests is vintage 78 RPM recordings, which I restore using the computer.
