My Voice Experience

Stepping into your shoes,
I explore your awkward step,
the worn down heel,
the tattered decal.
I turn into the mirror of
your face, my mask,
primp and preen
inside your clothing...
and when the curtain closes
I remove your pearls,
and grin-
such is life on the stage.

Now I am dancing youth,
voice strong and loud,
and yet muddy kneed,
Now I am crabbed old crone,
moving aching slow,
creaking, rasping,
an old withered wind.
Here, I flash the crimson villain cape,
and laugh like evil genius,
and there, I cringe and cower,
the street urchin stealing
a small supper.

My Training

I am new to voice-acting, though I have been involved with theatre for a long time. I was a young actress on the stage for the now defunct drama company Stage Polaris; I also took many drama and musical theatre lessons with them. I attended Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts for high school, and I was in drama I.B. for three years. We did a lot of theatre sports-improv, thinking on the fly, creating believable characters quickly with very little input. We had one workshop where we had to choose a children's story and read it to several Kindergarten classes. I was asked to come back and read again for them.

My friends and I used to sit under the stairwells at lunch, writing skits and stories and acting them out for each other. We would figure out characters by trying out different voices. We used to get together for "story parties" where everyone wrote one line and then we each got to read through the whole in as many outrageous characters as we could think of-a snotty aristocrat, a craven hunchback.

I informally sing as much as I can, and I will often imitate the voices of the singers if they're a unique accent to me-Australian, say, or a person from Manchester, England.

In high school, I was involved in as many performing arts and theatre troupes and plays and choirs as I could be.

Additional Skills

I work hard and learn quickly. I take direction very well. I am always willing to try something new.

I have a young niece and nephew I enjoy reading to. I like to use sound effects (wooshing wind, growling dragons) to make the stories more interactive for them.

I have worked a lot in retail, customer service, and I have a lot of practice talking to all kinds of people. I am adept at finding the right words to draw customers out of themselves, while still being friendly and efficient. I can communicate succinctly, or I can elaborate with lots of little details. I am a cheerful chatterer and personable person to talk to.

I can write extremely well, and I can sing.
