My Voice Experience
My decision to change career direction after many years of academic research and Anatomy teaching came after careful consideration as I became increasingly aware of a desire to fulfil my creative and vocal talents and explore new ventures. Thus, five years ago, on reaching the end of a Postdoctoral research contract at the University of Nottingham I undertook further post-graduate training in acting, voice and microphone technique at the Birmingham School of Acting and embarked on a career as a freelance Voice Artist, Actor and Writer. I now enjoy conveying expressions of thought, ideas and emphasis that can sometimes be lost in even the most accurate transcription and am able to deliver a range of character voices with colour, expression and clarity. With voiceover experience in healthcare training films and the Open University with Speakeasy Productions Ltd I am keen to expand my repertoire in areas of audio guides, commercials and corporate work, story-telling, play-reading and academic training scenarios.
My natural accent is derived from an early childhood in the Scottish Western Isles (Skye) and Argyll, followed by secondary education and university in South West Scotland and Edinburgh respectively.
My Training
I graduated with a BSc Honours Degree in Biological Sciences from Napier University, Edinburgh before moving to Nottingham to obtain a Doctorate in Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Nottingham Medical School.
Folowing my decision to pursue a career in the performing arts I completed the part-time course at Birmingham School of Acting "Performance and Theatre". In addition I have attended two summer schools in acting and vocal techniques at both the Birmingham School of Acting, and at East Fifteen Drama School in Essex.
My Studio Equipment
I have access to a local recording studio (Paperstone Studios) that offers, on a competitive hourly rate, Neuman Mics, Focusrite ISA preamps and Hafler monitors and which delivers an excellent quality of sound. This studio has experience of voice over recording for computer games, adverts, educational CDs and internet sites, children's stories and foreign languages, and has ISDN capability.
Additional Skills
With many years spent in the Medical School mortuary teaching anatomy to medical students, and through delivering undergraduate and post-graduate lectures at University I now have a thorough grasp of a huge range of medical and scientific words and phrases. I currently offer my services as a freelance writer for medical and scientific institutions so am up to date with advances in medical technology and pharmaceuticals, as well as having a good eye for grammar and punctuation. With excellent sight reading skills I enjoy participating in local story-telling and poetry workshops. Having been involved in choir groups and musical theatre companies I have a singing vocal range of mezzo soprano with a strong belt which gives my speaking voice a clear bell-like quality.
