My Voice Experience

I started in radio and television as a production specialist in 1974. At KLEW television in Lewiston, Idaho, I filmed (yes, when film was still the standard) edited, wrote, voiced and produced commercials. Next, it was off to KBRO/KWWR where I sold advertising time and worked closely with clients to write, voice and produce commercials. I left the broadcasting industry in 1981 to enter a more secure work environment as a government public affairs specialist, where I was a media spokesperson, writer, editor, and marketing specialist for the Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Army Reserve and the Bureau of Land Management. When the Internet came along, I provided voiceover narrations for BLM on the web, writing and voicing segments on the Sacramento River, Headwaters Forest Reserve, King Range National Conservation Area, California Coastal National Monument, and the Carrizo Plain National Monument. I also provided character voices for an Internet feature called "Funnybytes," aimed at younger audiences. During a unique training exercise for the 91st Division at Fort Ord, I wrote and voiced promotional material which was provided to the media.

My Training

I received a bachelor's degree in broadcast management from Eastern Washington University in 1974, with minors in vocal music, theater and business. I attended summer acting workshops while in college and performed in several college and community theater productions. As an Army Reservist, I attended the Defense Information School and completed requirements to be awarded the journalist military occupational skill. I received basic and advanced public affairs training while employed with the U.S. government. I am accredited (APR) by the Public Relations Society of America. I completed the masters voiceover training course from Such A Voice.

My Studio Equipment

Audio-Technica AT4040 cardiod capacitor microphone
Sony MDR-7506 stero headphones
MBox2 mini with USB cable
Pro Tools LE 8 software

Additional Skills

Over the years I have enjoyed the performing arts. I studied voice and have performed as part of singing ensembles and as a soloist. (Now, I pretty much reserve my singing to the shower.) I also studied theater and have performed in productions of Promenade All, Mister Roberts, Kiss Me Kate, Oklahoma, The Music Man and Carousel.

I was the media spokesperson for several government agencies on live radio and television programs as well as recorded interviews and programs.

In addition to the many years in radio, television and public affairs, I had a parallel career in the U.S. Army Reserve and attended primary, basic, and advanced leadership courses. As I advanced in rank I completed the First Sergeant Course and the Sergeants Major Academy. I was activated and deployed during Operation Enduring Freedom. I served 32 years, retiring in 2006 as a command sergeant major.
