Voice Description

I have a natural "real person" mid-rangey type voice, although out of love for the style, I've also developed a pretty good "1940's type" deeper announce guy. I can go warmer for corporate narrations or less polished for a Regular Guy sound. I have a wide range of pitch to my voice, and I've been paid to go from reasonably deep to somewhat high pitched and nasal. One client has called me his "go-to guy", versatile enough to bring in when the client wasn't too sure how they wanted to go with a certain project. My range of intimacy goes from being in bed with you to being across the aisle at a ballgame with you. My range of authority goes from being a peer with more informaton, to being the instructor with no sense of humor. Often though, my range comes just as much through a change in attitude rather than a change in vocal style.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

I've been a Russian thug, an Italian thug and a New York thug. I've been an Upper Class British Guy & a Lower Class British Guy. I've been a non-descript Euro-Trash kinda guy and a Southern California stoner Surfer Dude, but to tell you the truth, the bread & butter of my career is not in accents & dialects.

My Voice Experience

For over 25 years, I've been a full-time Union VO guy. I do it all from being a Staff Anouncer for the local ABC-TV affiliate, to voicing dozens of national Clorox TV commercials to hundreds of regional McDonalds commercials, to the guy on the street for an SF Chronicle radio spot. For Corporate work I'm usually the "peer with more information", although I can also present with a natural authority. I've done my share of video games for EA, Lucas Arts & other great game producers, including The Godfather, The Sims "Hot Date", Battlefield 1942, Galactic Battlegrounds, Jedi Starfighter, Psychonauts & Konami's Lifeline. Over the years, my regular commercial & corporate clients have included Orchard Supply Hardware, Lincoln/Mercury, TiVo, 24 Hour Fitness, Harrah's Reno & Tahoe, Oracle, Adobe & Pillsbury & Lego. I was the voice of the Preview Network for over a year before they became the TV Guide Channel. I even offered Tom Cruise a Guinness as the voice of a talking billboard in the film Minority Report. My Training

I've always felt that you learn more from a bad audition than a good class, but I've taken workshops with VoiceTrax in Sausalito, and with Marice Tobias in LA. When I first started out, I studied with a guy named Michael David McGuire who was extremely helpful & informative. I've studied acting & scene work with Full Circle Productions, Jean Shelton & ACT. Also improvisation with Sue Walden & Friends. I have a BA in Communication Arts with a Certifcate in Mass Media Studies from the University of San Francisco.

I participate regularly in a Jazz Ensembles workshop taught by Clark Suprynowicz, because when I'm not standing in front of a mic, there's nothing better than whacking on the ol'drum kit. I've studied ProTools at Bay Area Video Coalition, and recently began apprenticing myself as a 2nd Engineer (aka Studio Wench) to gain a better understanding of the subtle skills required to make great audio in a variety of recording environments.

My Studio Equipment

I have both a Home Studio & a Studio-in-a-Suitcase. In the studio, I use a Sennheiser 416 which is good on my voice & captures very little room. It goes thru a Great River or Avalon mic pre, depending on my mood. I also have a few Neumann U-87s and a pair of M149s that I bring out from time to time. I record onto ProTools at 24 bits. I have a Telos Zephyr ISDN box as well as a JK Electronics telephone hybrid box, so you can record it at your end and/or direct me in real time. My studio is extremely quiet, and was tuned under consulation with noted audio acoustician Chips Davis. (Thank you, Chips!)

My Studio-in-a-Suitcase uses the same Sennheiser 416 going thru an M-Box. I record on my Mac LapTop using ProTools LE. With this system, I've recorded numerous auditions, as well as pick-ups for McDonalds out of my room at Two Bunch Palms, and six TV Voice-Overs for Adelphia Cable out of hotel room hotel in Cabo San Lucas.

Additional Skills

I've been a full time VO guy for over 25 years. I'm easy to work with, and I don't like leaving the booth until we're both happy. With every job, I try to represent the best of what a Union VO talent should be. Rather than fill this space up with a lot of adjectives about how astronomically talented I tell my wife I am, I hope you'll just find your way to my website. I think that would give you a much better idea of my range and suitablity for your project than anything I could type into this box.
