My Voice Experience
Visitors to the Old Red Courthouse Museum in Dallas, Texas, will hear Jim's narration on the history of electric energy. He has voiced varied projects such as the VNR for the launch of Oncor Electric Delivery, the industrial video "The Great Oncor Mystery" and the employee benefits IVR for TXU Corp. For the Southwest premiere of the play "Cooking with Lard" in 2004, he adopted the accent of a rural Texas DJ to record the offstage curtain speech.
Professional voice work has played a major role in every phase of Jim's career, from his initial days as a radio announcer through broadcast journalism, corporate communications, and agency public relations.
His first brush with journalism came as a young disc jockey in San Angelo, Texas, when station manager William "Hi Pockets" Duncan (the famed first manager of Buddy Holly) handed him a portable tape recorder and said, "Here, you're now our news director." Opting for more formal training at the local university, Jim eventually moved to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where he became afternoon news editor and anchor for KRLD radio and news director of all news/talk WRR-AM, where he was honored with a Katie Award in the category of Best Radio Newscast. During that time, many of Jim's Texas-based reports were heard nationally over NBC's national NIS network. He also voiced numerous commercials for WRR AM & FM.
Leaving broadcasting for corporate communications, he became a spokesman for TXU Corp., a Fortune 500 company, where he was interviewed extensively by local, regional and national news media. In addition to handling varied writing and media-related responsibilities, he continued his voice work, narrating and appearing in many video productions.
In 2002, he joined a former colleague to co-manage Southwest Communications Associates (SCA), a Dallas-based public relations firm. There he continued to provide voiceovers for clients' projects.
When not busy with clients, Jim enjoys spending time with his children and their families and with his "better half," her two horses and other assorted pets on five acres near Dallas.
My Training
Between high school and journalism training at Angelo State University, Jim developed his voice talent at the storied Elkins Institute of Radio in Dallas, Texas. The remainder of his voiceover and commercial announcing was on-the-job, including stints at KGKL and KWFR-AM in San Angelo, TX; the legendary KXOL-AM in Fort Worth; and KRLD and WRR AM & FM in Dallas.
