Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects
I do what many call the "general American" or "standard American" dialect, but since I was raised in the south, I can do Southern, too.
My Voice Experience
I started working in commercial radio in 1991 as a DJ, and I recorded commercials all the time, too.
I've done voice work for some videos and television spots, too.
In 2002, I began working at Alabama Public Radio as a local host of NPR programs. I also produced and hosted a show called Alabama Life, and I produced and edited a documentary about southern accents.
During my time at APR, I also recorded 'voicetracks' for nighttime and weekend programming. Voicetracks are used when the station is fully automated. They are audio files recorded by the radio host earlier in the day. He or she may introduce songs, read announcements, and give general weather forecasts.
Voicetracks give stations the opportunity to stay on-air 24 hours per day without having to hire that many people. It's standard operating procedure in most radio stations.
The point is, I've spent a lot of time in the recording studio. And after I left Alabama Public Radio to pursue my master's (and now doctoral) degree, I've continued to practice and record voiceovers in my home studio.
My Training
In addition to experience working in radio, I graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor of arts in Communication. I've read books on voice work, learned from lots of practice, and have helped others improve the sounds of their voices as well.
My Studio Equipment
My home studio consists of my AT2020 Cardioid Condenser Microphone from audio-technica.
I also have an ART USB Dual Pre preamp that I use to connect the mic to my MacBook.
I record and edit with Audacity and GarageBand.
Additional Skills
I am very familiar with audio recording software and equipment.
