Voice Description

My British voice is well suited to voiceover and narration or audiobook work because it is authoritative, suave, sonorous and dramatic. I am told it is warm and sexy at least over the phone. It is exceptional in that my Oxford accent is unaffected and relaxed. This equips me with a smooth neutral voice for narration, and I can slip easily into impersonation and accent for dialogue, monologue and dramatic purposes. I also speak several languages well and without the usual inhibitions, having lived abroad most of my adult life. I speak Spanish, French, German and Italian - some Danish, Catalan, Latin and Anglo-saxon. I play roles easily.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

Accents and dialects: Upper-class or intellectual British, Cockney, Scottish, Irish, Australian, also some European accents, eg. French, Spanish, Italian, German, Swedish.

Characters:I can impersonate many characters, especially the pious, pompous, academic, decadent and condescending (Noel Coward style), whether British or European. I can sound like an artiste,a pundit,a politician, a professional, but also like the music-hall Cockney, the Yorkshireman or dour northerner. My American accents are alas still mildly flavored with British despite 50 years of residence in America.

My Voice Experience

I am a hardened professional and complete amateur at once. As a Professor of literature at Barcelona, Salamanca, and finally Columbia University (11 years}, I presented orally every kind of work -play, epic, novel, poem, critical prose. This is surely the best preparation for Voiceover or audiobook narration, since I had to win over, charm, thrill, move, persuade and impress my audience, not merely harangue them. You will not find many interpretations more nuanced than mine, though I cannot boast much commercial talent. I once served as a radio announcer on WBAI and produced some language tapes in Spain.

My Training

My voiceover talents are inherent rather than the product of training. Of course, one improves over the course of 50 years of reading aloud, lecturing and commentary. I played leading stage roles at school and college, but rarely since then. I was editor and journalist for two years and a radio anouncer briefly. I have spent the last 35 years improvising succinct historicalcommentaries to my adult students mostly through the mike or viva voce in the course of study tours round the world. Such travelogues are an exacting form of improvised voiceover.

My Studio Equipment

I have a Mac oomputer.

Additional Skills

My chief additional skills are in teaching, editing, writing, translating into English, and elucidating texts, which of course helps in their interpretation when it comes to performance. I believe my real contribution to voiceover would be sophistication and the authority and subtlety that goes with it. Sans blague, I would make a good teacher or director of voiceovers.
