My Voice Experience

My experience began in November, 1996 (Has it been that long already?). I was a junior in high school and was selected to be my school's public address announcer. I did everything from ballgames to morning announcements to special events. I used that experience to gain additional contract work as well as secure a college scholarship as a public address announcer during baseball season. From there, I applied my voicework experience to land a job at the college radio station (more on that in the next section). Immediately after graduation, I worked for a while at Love Communications, an ad agency that specializes in local cable television advertising. It was here that my voiceover work found a much broader audience, as I voiced television spots that ran on cable systems all over the state. I am now looking to expand my voiceover offerings and possibly considering working exclusively as a vocal talent.

My Training

My voice work training began in high school with a crash course from a seasoned voice over veteran who taught me technique and projection. His experience as a public address announcer for the city's baseball team proved beneficial to me to get my foot in the door to finding voice jobs for myself. After high school, I pursued a degree in Media Communications from Mississippi College. I managed to secure a production job at their radio station, WHJT-FM, which further allowed me to learn how to edit and mix my voice for radio spots as well as how to inflect certain parts of the ad copy. While my first thought was that it was a detour from my goal of working on air, I used my position and my increasing experience to work my way up to an on air position. I hosted my own weekly radio program "The Underground" for almost three years. My voice over demo, which will be posted soon, will contain a sample of some radio spots I produced during my time at the station. I also worked a side job as a board operator at the local ESPN Radio affiliate. Five years later, I emerged from Mississippi College with a masters' degree in Applied Communications and a firm grasp on Adobe Audition (or Cool Edit Pro to all you old schoolers like me out there!).
