My Voice Experience

Since winning Australia’s “Star Search” in 1991, Hugh Wilson has been a respected and in-demand professional vocalist and multi-instrumentalist in Australia, Singapore, and, since 2001, New York.

Credits include touring as a vocalist for Lenny Kravitz, recording backing vocals for Savage Garden’s debut album, co-writing and producing sessions for Sarah Blasko, Daniel James, and Steve Deal, and recording with myriad composers, producers and engineers in the NYC and Sydney advertising scenes, from Henry Hirsch to Lindsay Jehan, Sherman Foote, Peter Bliss, the Alessi brothers, Eric Kaye, Charles Fisher, Eric Weideman, Ben Butler, Mark Moffatt, La Menga Kafi, Shaun ‘Stakka’ Morris, Darren Solomon’s ”Science For Girls” and more.

Vocals featured on nationally televised commercials include: Sprite Zero (Freedom from thirst), Kohls, M&Ms, Smirnoff, L’Oreal, Hess, Home Depot (USA), and Foxtel, McDonalds, Hyundai, Toyota, South Australia Tourism, Coca Cola and Wendy’s (Australia).

Vocals on Australian television shows include Channel 10’s “Turn me on 10” campaign, Water Rats, Animal Hospital.

As a recording artist, Hugh released “Iliad” thru Polydor in 1992, and with the band ‘Vertigo’ released the top 40 single “Forever Lately” through BMG, followed by ‘Human Need’ with subsequent televised performances promoting all CDs on Aussie shows such as “Hey Hey it’s Saturday”, “Good morning Australia”, “Video Hits”, and more.

Additionally, since 2001 Hugh has worked as a music director for Ryland Angel, Christian City Church Manhattan (2003-2006) and Richard Fowler (2006 NYC production of “For Christ’s Sake” – in which he also performed) and as a worship leader for CCC Manhattan, Grace NYC, and Bay Ridge Christian Center (2007/08).

My Studio Equipment

Platforms: Own and use, Cubase 4, Logic 8, Reason, Ableton Live.

For vocals I generally go through a Rode NT2 condenser mic, into an Art tube preAmp, into a Tascam audio interface and then into a Mac Laptop.

Guitars I plug in direct and use Amplitube.
Other plugins include Melodyne, some Native instruments stuff like Kontact and the B4 organ.

HUGH is a Voice Coach and Vocal Producer.

After spending 6 months tutoring voice for young children in Gosford, NSW Australia, in 1994/95 Hugh began teaching at the School of Creative Arts in Oxford Falls Sydney, teaching songwriting, vocal technique, performance and recording classes, along with personally tutoring scores of students over a 5-year period.

In 1999-2000 Hugh also joined the faculty at Wesley Institute for Ministry and Arts in Sydney, to teach voice and computer recording production for two years.

In 2000 Hugh individually coached the singing team at Liberty Hill Christian Centre in southwestern Sydney over a 6-month period.

In January 2001 Hugh left Australia to spend six months in Singapore, teaching and coaching in City Harvest Church’s School of Creative Arts. Hugh offered group voice classes, songwriting classes, recording workshops and private voice tuition to more than a hundred students.

In late 2001 Hugh moved to New York City, where as eventual music director for Christian City Church Manhattan from 2003 - 2006, Hugh ran vocal workshops for the singing team.

In 2007 Hugh joined Kilroy Studios in Westchester NY, tutoring children and teens in voice, guitar and songwriting.
