My Voice Experience

Growing up, my dad ran his own business out of the home. As a kid, I didn't answer the phone, "Hello?" I was taught to say as politely as possible, "Thomas residence, this is Gwen." Until one day dad pointed out that that still wasn't "businessy-enough." Then, I was told to switch it to the more professional and mature-sounding, "Gwen Thomas."

When people would ask to speak to the man in charge, I'd say, "Let me just see if he's available, please hold," or "I'm sorry, he's on the other line, may I take a message?" Imagine a cute, little 10 year-old pulling this off convincingly, and you're imagining me.

Acting and singing have long been two of my fortés. I started playing with my voice in high school when I started to study foreign languages and was determined to speak them with a proper accent. I decided a good past time for me would be to take my friends rollerskating dressed up as "German exchange students" where we talked in thick German accents the whole night. I was consistently cast as the "older" (or even elderly) woman in my school's plays due to the more mature quality of my voice.

- Have done voiceover work for numerous amateur spoken-word recording projects, mostly by a group called Church of the Apostles in Seattle, WA.
- I do live, cold readings for their services, sometimes in front of an audience, but just as often from the "God mic" at the back of the room.
- I'm a reliable resource for a last-minute reader when others have canceled.

- Have sung in numerous successful independent bands between the years of 2001-present.

- Recently asked to perform as a spoken-word reader and backing vocalist in the live setting of a Dutch musical project- a Spoken Word Band.

My Training

- Been acting since age 8.

- Improv theater cast member for local theater sports teams from 1997-2000. Wide range of characters, some scripted, some off-the-cuff.

- 1999-2002, Worked in orchestra pit for Village Theater Company of Issaquah and Everett, WA.

- 2001-2004, I hosted a radio show at my university's radio station, KSPU- The Monster Hour (and I was your host Gwen the Monster). That was where I discovered I had a radio voice. I was also the program director of that radio station for three years.

- 2004, performed as Sam-I-Am in two-person cast of operetta setting of Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham"- a goofy character, kid-friendly.

- Bachelor's degree from Seattle Pacific University in 2004 in music theory and composition, and am a skilled song and jingle writer, which makes me fully trained and capable of composing on hold music, as well as music for commercials and television programs or theme songs for podcasts. Trained in classical and jazz music theory and have the most experience writing jazz-influenced orchestral pop. Experienced with beat and loop sequencing and production, as well.

- 2003- present, I work in ProTools and Reason, training was part of my BA degree.

- Singing voice is strong, clear, and pure-toned with a very light vibrato and I have a two-octave singing range from a G below middle C to the G atop the staff. Don't let the purity fool you- I can throw in a ton of soul. I took two years of professional voice training in jazz, primarily, but have been singing in choirs since I was eight years old, and in front of bands since I first started singing with my high school's big band at the age of 15.

- Maybe the best experience I have with voice over acting is that I learned from my mother from a very young age just how strong an effect good voice talent and voice acting could have on a listener. She would read me bedtime stories doing all the appropriate voices. She is the best voice over artist I know and has done many amateur voice over recordings as well. It definitely runs in the family.
