My Voice Experience
So I am up for a part playing an African American. I myself, am caucasian. Before my audition, I overhear the casting director say 'We just auditioned this black guy for the role. He was perfect." Immediately, I feel pangs of nervousness cross over me. "Maybe I should choose another character to read for" I think to myself. Then, another, more poweful thought crosses my mind: I don't have to BE black to get this role. Just SOUND black. And I can sound black. Just ask my friends who I used to crank call in the middle of the night. So, I go in, do my audition, crack up the casting director in the process. Four days pass, I get a call saying I get the role. So that's how I out blacked and actual black guy and got the role.
