Voice Description

As a broadcast journalist, my 'default' natural voice has been suitable for both news and longer reports for use on radio in a live or pre-recorded capacity. It is often described as deep, authoritative and warm (and not just because two of these qualities are given as an example on the site!), which would make it suitable for complementing narrations for audio books or documentaries.
Beyond this I have a fairly wide vocal range extending from low rumbling bass up to a teenage voice-breaking falsetto, while I can adapt to a lighter, more whimsical tone for adverts, or a quirkier idiosyncratic voice suitable for characterizations.
I have lived in London for around 15 years and spent a similar period in Southern England. My background is white, British, and middle class but I am comfortable with local improvisations on this from old geezer to inner city youth.

My Voice Experience

Professionally, I have worked as a freelance broadcaster – along with regular work in the magazine and newspaper world – and broadcast a number of light news stories, along with more substantial 3-4 minute self-scripted feature reports from around the world. Recently, I've been commissioned to deliver several trailers by a BBC producer.
Over the last ten years, I have broadcast around 25 of these mainly for a programme called World Report for the Irish state broadcaster RTE along with a 10-minute live 2-way from Ecuador for Radio 5 Live that made the station's pick of the week.

My Training

I am currently studying for a Masters at Regent's College in London as part of my training to be a psychotherapist. Around ten years ago I took a PG diploma in broadcast journalism with City University, London. Prior to that I have taken distance learning courses related to journalism, and a foundation course in social sciences with the Open University. I graduated initially with an HND in business studies.
During my training to be a broadcast journalist, we worked regularly in the studio and in addition to filing reports on a weekly basis, I took extra classes with a voice coach that were available for free. I also spent a day working on a demo CD with a professional voice over artist.

My Studio Equipment

I don't have my own studio so for professional work it would be best for me to record pieces outside from home. That said, I have recorded a number of journalistic pieces for broadcast using my Apple Mac with an external microphone or via my iPod using a Belkin stereo microphone.
I generally use Audacity to edit my pieces though I have previously used other software packages such as Pro Tools and Sound Studio. With my journalistic work it is usually sufficient for me to edit out unwanted gaps in the narrative, and where necessary amplify and normalise the recordings for the best results. I usually save the recordings as MP3s, WAV or Ogg Vorbis tracks.
I have access to a professional sound studio located close to me in South London. It has vocal booths running Logic Pro on Macs and is equipped with microphones that includes AKG 414s and a Neumann U87.

Additional Skills

I can write my own scripts having worked as a print and broadcast journalist for nearly 20 years.
As a trainee psychotherapist, I am increasing learning to develop a tone that is designed to make people feel comfortable, assured and relaxed in my presence.
I read widely including many classic texts, which has familiarized me with the English language used in works from Shakespeare onwards.
I speak decent French and Spanish with the appropriate accents whether in the language or accented in English.
