Voice Description

I have a fairly deep an resonant voice. I can make it warm deep and professional for narrations, expressive for audio book reading, fun and upbeat for commercials.

I have done considerable narration for sales and informational presentations. I have also done audiobooks including fiction, non-fiction and Biblical texts.

I began my voicover career as a Rock & Roll DJ in the early 70's, then worked part-time for an easy-listening station, so had to adaptmy voice for both.

I have done hard-sell automotive radio commercials as well.

I have done extensive acting and stage work as well as on-camera narration, and am a lay-reader at my church.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

My natural voice is non-accented Midwestern (born in Chicago), but I can easily change it to an authentic Southern accent if needed (have lived in Texas, Georgia, North Carolina (plus here in Tennessee for the past 40 years). I can deliver anything for a southern aristocratic interpretation to a good-ole redneck accent.

My Voice Experience

After winning first place for Oral Interpretation, Public Speaking and Extemporaneous Speaking in the North Carolina Forensics Competition in 1968, I realized that I had a voice that I could use for the entertainment and enjoyment of other people.

After entering college as an English Major and Speech and Theater minor, I took a partime job at a local top-40 radio station as an on-air personality. Part of my job was doing commercial production after my air-shift. Essentially, the copy I was to produce were local newspaper ads taped to a "Script". To keep from the embarassment of reading a newspaper ad, I began to write my own scripts, record them, adding music and/or sound-effects. Soon the sponsors began calling me and offering to pay me to write and produce their commercials for them. As I was finishing college, working at the radio station part-time, I joined a small advertising agency in Nashville as a writer-producer (and oft-times) voice-over talent for our clients.

After granduating college, I was promoted to creative director at the agency where I continued to write, produce and voice-over. I also worked a late-night air-shift at an easy-listening station.

Because of my theater work in college, I got involved with a community theater group in Nashville. Over the next ten years I acted in and directed over 20 shows. I also befriended an actor who worked at a large religious publishing house in Nashville. He was working on a project to produce the King James Version of the Bible on audio-cassette for use in homes and Sunday School classes.

I was cast in several voice-over roles in both the Old and New Testaments including Moses, Jobe, Isaiah, Paul and Jesus.

I did several other projects for the publishing house until my in-house contact left the company.

I didn't do any commercial work for about 5-years, but did volunteer reading for the local Nashville library as well as continued as a lay reader at my church.

In the mid-eighties my wfe and I moved to Denver. While there, I became a Eucharistic Minister and sub-Deacon in our church, and I had the oppotunity to write and deliver occasional sermons.

I worked for a TV station n Denver and had the opportunity to create, write, produce and do on-air work for a series of weely ski races for amateurs who had never raced before.

After returing to Nashville in the late 80's, I joined a company where I built and operated a video production and post-production facility where we created syndicated TV, radio and newspaper advertising for automobile mega-dealers across the country. I did extensive voice-over work for radio and TV spots, as well as on-air work for sales presentations and sales training.

After selling the company, working for several ad agencies, and raising a family, I have not done much voice work in the last ten years or so. However, I am now at a point in my life where I would love to get back into it.
