It’s clear that Voice 123 is not a scouting site. What is wrong with these scammers?

Local LA TV station just did a news story on the kind of scams we have been experiencing on V123 (they send you a “check” and then ask you to pay someone else). Apparently this is the latest scam methodology everywhere (not just here) and the scammers are applying it to employment sites, apartment listings, Craigslist, etc.  Just remember to always be suspicious whenever anybody asks YOU for money, under any circumstances.

FYI – another probable scammer
Clues:
His account name is Mark James but refers to himself as James Mark
The business name is not capitalized
He is an agent, but works for the advertising agent, but has a new management company
He is looking for an “act” instead of talent
Wants to use Gmail or Hangout for response
He joined Voice123 two days ago.

I really hate scammers.

“Diesel” is another big tipoff. They’ve used that a lot in their fake print ad/portfolio come-ons.

November 21, 2016 at 1:22 am

Yes, I got the same email. I clicked on his “voice seeker” profile and it says that he, or maybe she, and  sent 40 private messages and posted zero projects.

I emailed Voice 123 and hopefully their gone quickly.

Googling helps me find out quickly if someone exists, what they do, etc. This forum is the first thing that popped up after I did a quick online search.

Hopefully no one falls for it.

January 19, 2017 at 5:42 pm

Google Fu is fun!  I found this (209) 232-8841 number that led me to this.  I’m an actor in Las Vegas who was hired for a voiceover gig.  It was a “secret” project that they would tell me about the day before the recording.  No contracts sent or signed.

I was sent an e-mail by a “Joe Marvel”, with no contact or production information, outside of an e-mail that is not listed anywhere else, and a phone number that led me to this site.

My message? “<span id=”yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1484671294717_108943″ style=”-webkit-padding-start: 0px; color: #000000; font-family: HelveticaNeue, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Helvetica, Arial, ‘Lucida Grande’, sans-serif; background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 12.8px;”>Also,i</span><span id=”yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1484671294717_108942″ style=”-webkit-padding-start: 0px; color: #000000; font-family: HelveticaNeue, ‘Helvetica Neue’, Helvetica, Arial, ‘Lucida Grande’, sans-serif; background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 14px;”><span id=”yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1484671294717_108941″ style=”-webkit-padding-start: 0px;”><span id=”yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1484671294717_108940″ style=”-webkit-padding-start: 0px; line-height: normal;”> will like to remind you that you are paired with the Consultant Engineer.Do proceed to having the payment Deposited at your bank for confirmation/verification as soon as possible tomorrow morning and it will take about 24hours for funds to clear at your bank and once cleared, deduct $400 as your pre-payment for your services and have the rest sent to the Consultant Engineer  who will take care of all technical aspect of the job and studio rental we are going to use for the recording with other planning. Your remaining balance of $550 will be given to you on the day two of the recording. “</span></span></span>

I asked Joe to clarify, and he couldn’t/wouldn’t, repeating the above message.  Funny how he needs to tell me how to deposit the check on a timeline.

The check would be worth $2,500.  I am to take $400 out, give the rest to the “Consultant Engineer”, and then get the remaining $550 on the final day.  Took a note from this site, called the recording studio: It was a band rehearsal studio with no scheduled time on the dates.  Called my bank, and they said it sounds like a red flag, and if the check doesn’t clear, then I am responsible for the $2,500 out of my own pocket.

I kept asking him to clarify how/why I’d be responsible for money.  He finally said that the engineer is “in transit” on another project, and sending his money would cause delay (and yet mine wasn’t an issue?) as he wouldn’t be able to process it, so the client decided to pair the engineer’s and my funds together as one lump payment that I somehow got the responsibility to disburse.

Considering all the similarities in everyone’s stories, this is a long-running script scam that I thank you for sharing as it just saved me.  What to take from this?

Google the e-mail.

Google the phone number.

Google the studio address and call them to confirm if the time for your gig has been booked.

Call your bank and explain the situation before doing ANYTHING with a check like this.

Talent shouldn’t act as a “middle man” for disbursing funds for studio rental or payment of other departments.

Read the stories here.  See if there are common threads about “Consultant engineers that can’t cash their own checks due to traveling”, or having to finance aspects/take on responsibilities that are well out of your performance talents.

Be careful if you sign anything, but that seems less likely, as production client details remain “secret” during the set-up, and isn’t likely to happen anyway.

Thanks again!

And I also just got the check in the mail. No instructions, name, or contact info. for the supposed “Engineer”, and I’ve asked him in the past.

January 25, 2017 at 10:27 pm

I got a check from someone using the same MO as described above today, $950 for the job, but they’ll prepay me $400 and to give the balance of the prepayment check to the engineer.  They’re using the name Malvin Woods, malvinwood@gmail.com, via email, but the same phone number, 209-232-8841, for texting.  They said they got my contact from Casting Now (I don’t have voice files on that site).  They seem very antsy about being told I received the check. The cashier’s check they sent has no watermark on it.  They sent the check by USPS Express Mail from Sherwood Nance, but the return address does not exist and the companies on the return address, Balmoral Advisory Service, and the cashier’s check, MAK Advisory Group in Kansas City, MO, do not match.  Also the city on the return address, New Haven, MI, is on the other side of the state from where the check was actually sent, Lamont, MI.  I talked to my bank and the local police who said all they can tell me is to shred the check and to cut off communication since I have not lost any money.
