My Voice Experience

In a high-tech company I once worked for, I was chosen to voice the thoughts and speech of a "typical employee" in a 5-minute "Day in the Life" video for the annual party. Happy-go-lucky person talking to himself, chatting with various colleagues.

Master of Ceremonies for numerous performances of a small madrigal singing group (I sang baritone). Introducing the group, explaining the songs. Brief, but informative.

Celebrated the life of a dear departed friend, as Master of Ceremonies at the square dance he requested. Celebrating, admiring, emotional, humorous. The attendees cried, laughed, and applauded our friend.

I created and teach a course in Leading and Following in ballroom dance. Instructive, humorous, supportive.

My Training

BS Physical Sciences
MA Linguistics (learned about dialects and voice production)
MS Computer Science

Sang baritone in madrigal singing group (8 singers, one-on-a-part) for 8 years. Our group took weekly group voice lessons from a professor of music at Stanford.

Additional Skills

Bottom line: My voice is transparent--it transmits my personal interaction style, friendly but business-like, inquisitive and instructive, humorous and also analytical, a supportive leader.

Details follow:

My technical life as a software professional started as the guy who works in the back room, but grew into a team leader. I became effective at working with individual colleagues and customers in a direct one-on-one relationship.

After a few more years, I moved to Marketing, so as to teach our salespeople and our customers about a revolutionary product our company had created. At that time, I gave technical sales presentations in US, Germany, and France (two of them in French). I became experienced at talking and listening to a crowd. My presentations were technical, but inevitably included my lively and slightly whimsical enjoyment of life.

At the same time, my madrigal singing experience had grown from simply rehearsing in our living rooms to performing before a full house at San Jose Center for Performing Arts, and loving it!

Now my technical focus has morphed into a role interacting with people with needs (customers) and with the people who can create products (programmers). In all cases, I am perceived as explaining AND learning, as friendly but business-like.

How does this relate to voice overs? I relate to people (one or many) as a sensitive, knowledgeable, happy, inquisitive, cooperative leader, follower, and overall team player.
