Voice Description

I have a rich sonorous baritone which deepens to a full bodied bass. My upper end is a little reedy, perhaps(which can be generally resolved by rolling down the 8K); but this gives me a good deal of vocal flexiblity between ranges. I also have a reasonably clear countertenor for additional vocal gymnastics. I can hit the passionate resonant tones needed for good narration and can do a good job at being the smooth presenter, the funny guy, the man next door, the cool dude or any number of character voices. I excel at funny dialogue and creative projects for all media.
I have a very good ear and mind for language and dialect including a wide variety of English (Cockney, Liverpudlian, High, Standard, Irish, Scot) and American (Mid-Atlantic, Southern, Western, Miner & Tough Guy) dialects, Conversational Spanish and Italian, as well as work with Old & Middle English, Middle French, Latin and a smattering of study in Russian, Ancient Greek, French and Lithuanian.
I would be excellent for cartoon and story telling and can do creatures and animals with a wide variety of inflection, growl, intonation or whinny which my daughter loves. My son thinks I excel at action heroes and story narrative. I do impressions of celebrities rather than replication and can do good approximations of icons such as Jimmie Stewart,Gabby Hayes, the Hulk, Tarzan, Coyote, Sinise, Waterston, Capote, Keillor, etc.
My voice is distinctive and unique but always subsumed to the work. Still, I feel that good listening is the key to good voice work.

My Voice Experience

21 Years of non-stop infant to young adult book reading, improvised story telling for my own children have honed the creative development of my vocal technique.
More recently, for the past 4 years as President and Chief Spokesperson/Master of Ceremonies of the not for profit Des Plaines Theater Preservation Society I have made numerous speeches and presentations before the Des Plaines City Council, ward meetings, condo association meetings, library meetings, gala benefits, radio broadcasts(live and studio)and as host of over 50 presentations of classic, silent and contemporary films as well as Jazz and Folk Concerts at a vaudeville era movie theater. I write all my own speeches, assist with my own PowerPoint, and write all press releases, skills I would be happy to share. I am as at ease with live audiences as I am behind the mic at home or in the studio.
Some highlights of my career have included being host of the "Mid-Day Concert" on WCSB-FM, 1979-1981, an acceptance speech on behalf of Danny Glover for Best Supporting Actor at the 1986 Joseph Jefferson Awards, and the nomination presentation for the Des Plaines Theater to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
I have strong experience in the artistic creation, direction and production of live and multi-media events, concerts, original video concepts, radio broadcast, recording, sound systems. Some highlights include "James Taylor in Concert for Nuclear Disarmament", (Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1981), Assistant Direction Sound Design and Resident Co. Stage Manager (Steppenwolf Theatre Co., 1983-1989), Lighting and Staging for Presidential Appearances (White House Communications Department/Bridgewater Sound/SCS Productions, 1998-2000). I have a good idea of the bigger picture and how my voiceover work fits in with the work of other creative and stressed out artists and craftsmen. I can work with patience, understanding and creativity to make it happen. Right. And on the First Take.

My Training

My vocal training began early in my youth in choirs, early language schooling and an ease with accents and what we now call improv, then known as clowning around, which amused my friends no end. Formal vocal training began with the dedicated teachers at Lakewood High School and continued into college at Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve U. I have near perfect pitch and serious musical training in composition and instrumental work on piano, guitar, trumpet and percussion. I have also done directing and vocal coaching for opera (including medeival)& theater (Shakespeare and contemporary).
Vocal Technique and Maintenence is something I take very seriously. I rarely go scratchy and can almost always work. Mine is a voice you can rely on for the long term.
Highlights of my performance career which have required particularly distinctive voice work have included Shakespeare's "Troilus and Cressida" (as Agamemnon, 1979), David E. Freeman's "Creeps" (as Michael, a young victim of cerebral palsy, 1980) and various performances in the mid 1980s at storefront theatres in Chicago.
I attended an acting and audition class taught by Tom Hanks over the summer of 1979, if you can imagine that. Over the years I have been encouraged by such voice over artist greats as Austin Pendleton, John Mahoney and Yuri Rasovsky. A late starter, I am looking forward to making up for lost time.

Additional Skills

I am very well read in classic and contemporary literature, political science, history, science and the arts which gives me a great understanding of what you want communicated. As I said, though, I have learned, in this lifetime, that to be a good speaking voice you'd better be listening really good. I am equally attuned to pop trends and cultural archetypes and how these are expressed in what we hear. I can give you what you want.
