Voice Description

I presently have developed (4) voice characaterizations. 1) A somewhat high-pitched voice, similar to a clown voice, with a slight nasal echo. This voice offers clarity as well as volume to reach the back of the room. 2) An old man's voice projected deep in the throat that helps remove any residual accent yet provides clarity and enunciation. 3) An English-style woman's voice about an octave to an octave and a half above my normal speaking voice. 4) A southern Cowboy voice rather booming and gravelly in sound, yet caring. Each of my characterizations have a distinct personality unique to the voice.

My Voice Experience

I have spent over 15 years developing voice characterizations with a puppet team at a local church using Muppet-esque type puppets. I was encouraged to develop a "personality" along with the puppet voice to create individuality to my puppet characters. This personality trait would keep the puppet character intact regardless of the acting/drama situation, a key to keeping the attention of 75+ children in the age group 6 - 12 years. I am presently using an Axtel latex Dodo bird puppet with children in a story-telling mode and his "personality" and character has made "Dodie" a local celebrity and a hit at various functions. It is and always will be fun to entertain children.

My Training

I spent a week during the summer of 1986 with professional puppetteer and ventriloquist, Dave Winchell, from Winter Haven, Florida in exchange for teaching Dave, and to a lesser extent, Karen, his wife the fine art of magical illusions that could be mastered easily and yet appeal to a broad range of audiences. At the time, Dave had a Saturday morning children's program televised to a local audience. In addition to learning and practicing daily with voice charaterizations, I also learned production and direction techniques to create a polished performance. These skills are constantly being refined and developed with the ever-changing world of children's entertainment.
