Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

I have a Canadian undertone that occasionally creeps out, but I don't think that actually counts as an accent I 'perform'... Other accents? Unfortunately none.

I play a good 'straight man' character to anyone else's 'completely off the wall', though--I don't break up easily, which can be amusing against insanity.

My Voice Experience

Didi's vocal experience began before the age of one with the utterance of her first word and, according to everyone who knows her, she has apparently never shut up since. A deadly mix of Irish and Italian is to blame--just a recipe for wild hand gesturing over rabid, rambling story-telling.

Professionally, though, she trained in Radio Broadcasting in Toronto, Canada during the mid-80's when there were very few woman making headway into that all-boys' club. Back in the day, they wouldn't bother wasting time on you with that kind of training unless your audition proved you had what it took. AND of course, girls had to do it all better just to break even. Second year never really came as she was already jobbed out to a large market fringe country radio station (CHOO 1390).

While paying her dues starting part-time, as the only female voice in the area Didi found a lot of stuff thrown at her beyond the strict boundaries of her job--lots of local PSAs, live obits, lost pet reports, and commercials commercials commercials. Moving to full-time overnights only brought more in-house production (radio plays, presentations, etc.), glad-handing for the station, community appearances and then branching out to other studios which led to voice projects for friends and then voice and writing projects for friends of friends who dabbled in film and then away from live broadcasting entirely to the commercial sector and communication training with a side order of long fiction.

The commercial sector proved an odd, but eager recipient for good voices for IVR phone systems and business presentations and communication skills in general that hundreds walked away from the training of confident in their new abilities to change the course of a business conversation simply on the tone of their own voices. While still involved in this to date, Didi continues to pursue voice over for the love of it and a tandem long fiction career.

Additional Skills

In the day-in-day-out I've been a coach and mentor in live communication skills toward commercial retail applications including call centre and front line for over 20 years. People "don't talk good"... I show them how and do it by example, so it keeps me fresh.

I'm also active in local film production where I offer script doctoring services and dialogue coaching.

Actively maintaining the 'sound' of the IVR phone system for a large Internet services company in Toronto, Canada helps me preserve my IVR voice between projects.

Outside of voice, I maintain a love affair with long fiction writing under a pseudo that keeps up my copy editing skills.
