My Voice Experience

Back in highschool, I used to come up with silly ideas for anything from videogames to comics and stories, but having no ability to draw I used the one creative outlet I had: I'd write and record audio plays with these characters interacting. Sometimes the rest of teh family got involved, adding sound effects for example, which often gave these goofy ideas a hint of production value (and often made a silly idea hilarious).

And then, once I was out of high school, I started channeling this talent into a new direction. For 10 years I had this really annoying habit where I'd play video games with voice over functions so I could play characters. I made a point out of playing these characters in role, so I could be anything from a (stereotypical - sorry!) Scotsman to a full-blooded Orc. Sometimes I'd play a shooter and insist on using our knives because they were our swords, and often die a thousand deaths, because that's the sort of thing that amused me - having fun for fun's sake!

From there, I went on to puppetry and did some Internet radio projects where once again I'd role play an easily offended radio host who quickly let things roll off his back (he often seemed manic).

My Studio Equipment

My weapons of choice are an M-Audio MobilePre attached to an Audio Technica 2035 Condenser Mic, and my previous setup was a Tascam US-122 attached to an AT3032. The 2035 does a far, far better job catching my voice, and I don't need a MIDI interface - plus I like to keep things mobile, so the Pre has been perfect.

(Being a techie, I also like M-Audio/Avid's track record on driver support!)

Software-wise, I've found the MobilePre version of Protools limiting and Audicity serves my needs just fine. I've used it for years and it offers me a lot of flexibility, though I'm open to considering other tools if there's some killer feature I absolutely must have.

Additional Skills

I have over a decade of computer service skills under my belt, having worked as a contractor for Microsoft and simply being a huge geek.

I've also taken courses on writing, and I occasionally volunteer for editing.

I worked for a puppetry charity that focuses on social messages which I'll probably go back to that in the 2011-2012 season. In technical terms, I think the best compliment I've ever received was that my lip-synch skills were fantastic (It wasn't easy at first to operate a five-pound puppet with a tightly packed head for a half-hour show!)
