The game stars a character by the name of Max Payne, who was a private detective in New York City, who was set up, and framed, to have people believe he killed his partner, his wife, and his child. Over the course of the game, the character slowly turns from a stand up cop, to a gritty, gunslinging madman, who's only goal left in life is to seek revenge on the people who wronged him.
This particular quote is mentioned in the game when Max is talking to himself about events that will cause the end of the end, and how after the dissapointment of Y2K, no one ever believes that anything will bring the end of the world as we know it.
