Voice Description

My voice is North American but with no distinctly regional accent. It is rich, warm and musical with the ability to inhabit many personalities and ages of women; from cranky infant to petulant teen; from seductive sexpot to prudish spinster; from Jewish mama to Italian fishwife. It can also adopt a completely serious tone and quality that is excellent for documentary narration, audio books and most business needs.

My Voice Experience

From the first time I heard my voice on a scratchy reel-to-reel tape-recorder as it played the audio dramas and homemade versions of popular TV shows (like Star Trek), my best friend and I created as children, I was hooked on the medium of recording the human voice. Growing up I loved hearing recordings of everything produced during the Golden Age of American radio and later was thrilled to learn radio drama was alive and well in Britain when I moved to London for four years. There I studied radio drama and sold two produced radio plays to the BBC. Like most playwrights I enjoy playing all the characters I've created--at least in my head--and learned, through both writing and performing, the subtle nuances of the human voice and all that it can project. I think I have an advantage over most voice-over actors in that, having been on both sides of the stage I can more easily translate a script and get to the heart of the emotion the writer and director want to project. I am a very quick study, a wonderful "cold read" and my professional audio work has been heard during the Howard Stern Radio Show on several nationally-broadcast commercials I wrote, directed and voiced for TRIMSPA during the last two years. I have recorded work for AT&T and voice-mail messages for TRIMSPA. I have also performed in three produced Gilbert & Sullivan musical parodies for which I wrote the book and lyrics and was also the director of these productions, which starred, along with myself, the late great science fiction author, Isaac Asimov.

My Training

Aside from the experiences mentioned above, I have also studied Radio Drama with the City Center of Literature in New York and Improvisation with the Chicago City Limits Workshop in Manhattan. As the author of a best-selling children's book --"Is Your Mama a Llama?" (Scholastic)-- I am also in demand as a professional speaker at schools and literacy events and usually perform works in progess for my audiences; this can involve singing as well as acting, both of which I very much enjoy doing...especially when I'm being paid to appear!

Additional Skills

As a professional with experience as a writer, director and producer of radio commercials in the marketing department of a national company I can anticipate and appreciate all the skills clients are looking for in a voice over professional. In addition, I can sing, have a great memory for lyrics and, as a professional writer, possess a proven, amazing ability to write parodies of almost any song a client can suggest. And since I love the creative process involved in producing great work I have endless patience in providing exactly what clients want. I don't mind perfectionists because I can be one, myself. If someone wants 20 different readings of the same line, I'm only too happy to oblige...and can keep my sense of humor while doing it!
