Voice Description

I think that the reading material itself has the most impact on how my voice sounds. I simply try to interpret the material as best I can while reading, and allow my natural emotions to do the job. In a novel, I try to read into different character descriptions in order to get an understanding of each character, and once I get a mental picture of what kind of person he or she is, I try to let that image color my voice. For instance, if it's Hagrid, the half-giant gamekeeper and teacher of Caring for Magical Creatures at Hogwarts in Harry Potter, I picture a large man, wearing poor clothes because he is a simple man, and a huge face and beard, and a very tough heart and soul, and I try to let that show in my own voice.

I speak Japanese and English, and English is my native language. I have been told at times that I sound like a native Japanese speaker.

My Voice Experience

I've read many wonderful stories softly and aloud. Some of my favorites when I was a child were The Redwall series, by Brian Jaques, as well as Richard Adams' Watership Down. I listened to several audio books including the original Star Wars radio series, The Lost World, by Michael Chrichton, and The Rainmaker by John Grisham. Recently I've read almost the entirety of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince aloud with my family, and have just begun to read Huckleberry Finn aloud as well.

My experience with Japanese truly began with an elementary course in Japanese at U.C. Berkeley, but previous to that my family hosted a pair of Japanese exchange students for a couple of weeks when I was very young. I've watched several anime, my favorite of which was a film Animeigo produced in the United States named Kamui No Ken, based on a series of novels by Yano Tetsu. I went to Japan on a vacation last winter, had a very fun time, and learned a lot about the language, people, and their culture there.

My Training

I've taken several drama classes at U.C. Davis. I took two elementary acting classes, each of which familiarized me with the fundamentals of assuming the role of a character. The Stanislavski method was taught, which emphasizes playing a character's objectives, motivations, beat by beat through the course of a play.

I also took an ACT II Studio ACT class at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco through which I got to know several talented young actors and actresses and which left a deep impression on me.

I also took one class at the Berkeley Repartory Theatre in acting Shakespeare. My most memorable moment was memorizing one of Shakespeare's sonnets called "When I do count the clock which tells the time," a very emotionally effective analysis of time in poetry.

I recently sang with the San Francisco State University Chorus, and we had a very exciting finale at the Most Holy Redeemer Church in the Castro district in San Francisco. David Xiques conducted us the entire way through, and did a very good job. My parents came, and were very pleased with my performance.

My training in Japanese has been through learning on my lonesome, through an elementary class at U.C. Berkeley, several classes at San Francisco State University, and a trip to Japan, which was delightful. I even picked up a little Japanese sign language.

Additional Skills

I am a beginner and have no experience reading professionally, but I have a passion for stories. My educational life has been a very mixed bag of history, literature, art, acting, science, and foreign languages.

This being said, my true talent is loving whatever I do, and doing whatever I love. Anyone wishing to hire me to do voicework for them should know most of all that I will dedicate myself to the best of my ability to do a bang up job for them.
