Between 2010 and 2012 I won 3 LA Comedy Awards in the voice/production category - 2 awards with Greg Broadmore (Weta Workshop) for Most Hilarious National Radio Advertisements and Best Web series.
From LACA: David’s voice and production work on the national ad campaign promoting the latest products from Weta Workshop’s Dr. Grordbort's Infallible Aether Oscillators, (a line of full scale, high quality movie-prop style collector ray guns) rocked our judges with these amazing audio submissions. David has been working in radio station production rooms creating gems for over three decades.
Along 30 years in radio, I have produced numerous audio projects for Weta Workshop beginning with "Dr. Grordbort’s" collectables and books, including ads for "Lord of The Rings" collectables, "District 9" " Tin Tin" many other collector items. I produced the entire graphic novel written and illustrated by Greg Broadmore entitled “Victory” that I voice acted and produced solo.
Main focus:
Voice characters/sound design and all its amazing possibilities for use in all forms of media, with a focus on the creative area between voice, sound effects, and music, in essence creating sounds that tie the effects and the music together. I have also created thousands of unique Sound FX. Production Skills include mixing an editing up to 24 tracks of voice, music and sound FX
Foley Skills:
Matching live sound effects with the action of the picture, supplying the subtle sounds that production mikes often miss. The rustling of clothing and a squeak of a saddle when a rider mounts his horse give a scene a touch of realism that is difficult to provide using other effects methods.
Having grown up in, and around the entertainment industry it was natural for me to be involved in radio programming and voice acting.
I have dedicated three decades to sound design because of the vital energy producing power of voice, music, atmospherics, and special effects sound. The following is a testimonial from a friend and co-worker:
David,
Regarding your abilities, what you offer is unique in the media. You have the ability to direct and develop talent - either in radio or on TV - like no one I've ever seen. The experience of watching you do it is sort of like watching a great football coach with his team at halftime.
All of this, of course, is based in an instinctive sense of what makes for a compelling and dramatic story. You know the key things that people respond to, the kinds of stories that draw people in. You’re able to cut through the obvious and mundane right to the juiciest of a pack of topics. And furthermore, you have in this sense a flair for the comic and unusual that makes your takes and topic choices unique and different than anyone else I know in the business.
On top of all of this, your ability in terms of audio production is unparalleled. For most of the ten years you and I have worked together, you’ve taken seeds of ideas I’ve had and grown them into full-fledged works of radio theater with the click of a mouse. Your versatile character voices, your editing prowess, and your musical ear all contribute to this. You have a brilliant sense of theater of the mind that can be turned to any medium.
So when you tell me it’s difficult to encapsulate what your strengths are, I suppose that’s true. But only because what you do is so unique that it doesn’t fit into the traditional categories of producer, director, coach, or editor. You’re all of these things and much more.
Beowulf Rochlen
Executive Producer
Talk Radio Network
I have my own studio complete with Telos and ISDN for remote connections. I have the ability to mix and add sound FX.
Currently, I am Senior Executive Producer and Team Leader at the creative boiler room for the Audio Taskforce at Talk Radio Network (the 2nd largest distributor of Talk programming in America, and home for 4 of the top 10, most successful nationally syndicated radio personalities.
My career has spanned 3 decades, I have done so many ads, with so amny voices the list is too long to mention. However, I have produced ads for Donald Trump - Saint Jude Childrens Hospital. I have been the voice of Quantas Airlines - and many more.
I can provide a personal testimonial from Sir Richard Taylor (Director Peter Jackson's partner). When the movie "District 9" premiered I made product advertisments that had to be approved by Peter Jackson.
I was told that it might be difficult to get these ads approved because Peter Jackson is very particular about production. To the amazement of my contact at Weta New Zealand, the ad was instantly approved for national airing, which according to Tim Launder had (to his knowlege)never happened before.
