Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

Although I don't claim to be an expert as far as character voices or accents are concerned, I have pulled off successful radio spots with the following characters:

Arnold Schwartzeneger, Count Dracula, Santa Clause and a sarcastic elf, a Hillbilly named Buck, Ed Sullivan, Cheech and Chong, and a high energy auto racing promo announcer.

There may be more that I've long since forgotten, but the above listed characters immediately comes to mind.

My Voice Experience

I've been in the radio business off and on since 1988 after graduating from Connecticut School of Broadcasting. I've worked at several radio stations, both as an on-air talent and in sales.

Even while working in sales I was presented with the opportunity to do my own voiceover, production work and copywriting, giving me artistic license and total control of the product which I was selling.

This allowed me to become as creative as I wanted, subject of course to the client's approval. I found that most of my clients had a great sense of humor, and many asked me to write and perform funny commercials, a request that I was more than happy to accomodate.

I've also done a lot of more serious spots as well, ranging from extremely laid back to very high energy car dealer ads. I always try to interpret the approach that the client is interested in, whether or not I write the copy myself.

Although I try to be as versitile as possible, I would say that my preference is for very positive, cheerful, upbeat types of reads.

My experience over the past 20 years has primarily been in radio, however I'm confident that I can adapt my style of voiceover work to most anything if necessary.

My Training

I actually began my broadcasting career back in the fall of 1973 while attending Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner Massachusetts. I enrolled in the public communications course at the college which gave me an general understanding of the broadcasting business.

Circumstances at the time were such that I decided not to finish the entire course, chosing instead to pursue other areas of interest.

Several years later, seeing changes coming to the field I had chosen, I decided to revive my interest in broadcasting, specifically radio. I attended evening classes at Connecticut School of Broadcasting in Boston, graduating at the top of my class. Although I recieved training in both radio and television, and was encouraged to go in the direction of TV, my first love had always been for the radio side of the business.

I have been a self taught guitarist and drummer since about the age of ten, as well as an avid record collector. Suffice to say that music has always been a big part of my life. Although I grew up in New England in a home where my parents spoke with a strong New England regionalism, I did my best to pattern my speech after those I heard on radio and TV, which was of significant value when I chose to enter radio as a profession.

After Graduating from CSB, I took a job as an on-air personality at WORC in Worcester MA, and have spent the last 20+ years in and out of the radio business.

My Studio Equipment

I am currently in the middle of a cross-country move, and will be re-locating in Tucson Arizona, leaving Massachusetts on 10/7/09. As a result, I do not expect to have my new studio up and running for a few months.

As soon as we find our new home and the new studio is ready to go, I will add that information. Thanks for understanding.

Additional Skills

In addition to offering my services as a freelance voiceover artist, I also hope to pursue copywriting on a more regular basis.

Obviously I have had considerable experience in writing copy for radio spots over the past 20 years or so, but I am also in the process of developing a freelance copywriting business which will encompass other types of writing as well.

I have aligned myself with a group based in Florida known as American Writers and Artists Incorporated (AWAI) and have taken their course in copywriting which is geared primarily toward the direct mail end of the business. This training will enable me to expand my writing into such areas as sales letters, brochures, press releases, speech writing and more.

This experience has given me a new outlook as to how I approach voiceover copy, and how to get the most impact out of every word and phrase. In addition, I have always relied on my knowledge of music as well when it comes to matching up music beds with voice tracks to produce a great finished product.
