Voice Description

My voice is deep and bassy, demonstrating excellent pronunciation and diction abilities. My pacing is very good. I work with the entire thought presented by a phrase or sentence, and have an ability to find the "cresting moments" in a script that really convey its meaning.

I can come across as wise and empathetic, a good narrator, a good explainer; or conversely be commanding with an edge that gets attention and response. Others have described my voice, calling it characteristic, natural, strong, believable, urgent.

For a long time before words were written down, it was the spoken word that fired people's imaginations. I try to maintain a sense of that when I'm working on a production.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

American, Southern American, Western American, Some Northern American Dialects (Bronx, Boston, etc). I can do a clipped east Indian British dialect and some British dialect. And, I can produce some character voices that sound completely different than my normal speaking voice.

My Voice Experience

I have over 30 years of voice experience. In my previous profession, I was responsible for writing and voicing short, 30 second scripts for business promotional purposes. These became phone messages to executives about the offerings of my employers, and they led to millions of dollars in income.

For over a year, I have voiced my own weekly, 30 minute program that features stories about local area businesses and the issues that affect them including the economy, government and politics, and the dynamics of the personalities that run them. This is broadcast by a local radio station. Recently I've taken on a second program for the same broadcaster highlighting area events.

I also do narrative readings for documentary and audio book applications.

My Training

In college, I earned a degree in Speech and Theater.

I worked in the arena of complex sales for over 25 years. One element of this work involved scriptwriting and voicing messages to prospective buyers that were difficult to reach. I knew I was getting good at this when my ratio of returned calls began to exceed 50%.

I worked for a time for a company that produced On-Hold messages, and have done fund-raising for the local symphony. I've done business development work for people in the performance industry who offer audio/visual services for events and performances. Out of these experiences I grew an ambition to do formal voice-work.

Over the years I found several teachers, the best being my most recent teacher. His course included the physical part of voice-over, diction, breathing, pronunciation, etc. It included lessons in the selection and use of the kind of equipment needed to set-up a recording studio, as well as lessons in sales and marketing.

I have my own recording studio, and I use it to do voice work every day.

For about 2 years I have been narrating a weekly 30 minute radio program based on local area business issues. More recently I was asked to add an additional 30 minute program based on local events.

My father used to make the observation that talent is essential, but the ability to work tirelessly for the right results is even more important. So, while I am a talented voice person, the thing that makes me a great project partner is the ability to work hard to get the right results.

Additional Skills

I'm thorough, detailed, and methodical in my work, honest, and strive to do a good job for people. I know how to commit and how to perform good work.

My skills were developed over a long time doing work that was necessary and extremely challenging, and occasionally satisfying. Voice work is necessary and very challenging, but I love it more than anything else I've ever done. The element of loving my work is so transformative, it's hard to imagine doing anything else. I just cannot do a bad job.
