Voice Description

Hi guys, I also sing, so if you want to hear my track 'Lady' please go to www.myspace.com/chrisruleshughes - i use certain styles for certain songs, this one would be whispery.

Smooth would not be my voice, It can be rather cartoonish, and comical. Alot of the voices I use are Character based, I can do whinny voices, and have been told I speak with a smoky, husky type voice - which i use to do sly characters, 'players' etc..

My Voice Experience

I'd say if I was working on a cartoon, I could voice a whiiny spin doctor, or, because my voice has been desribed as golden [ singing] i could pull of a good nice guy, hopeless romantic. it hasn't matured into a barry white style,and won't..for a looooooooong time,so i know I can play a teen, and posisbly a child. - I'm 23.

My Training

Physical Theatre and Musical Theatre aswell as a Stand up Comedy course including lots of performances,three diploma's and a degree [drama] aswell as singing has helped me to learn about my voice. Playing stylised and quirky characters such as Roderick Usher,Squealer - Animal Farm, plus playing the nice but somewhat geeky guy's - Nick Piazza - Fame the Musical, and doing idiosynchratic stand up has influenced my physical approach to really animating my voice, using my face alot, and being not bad with accents of a characature style. I use my br352 studio [pretty cool little thing] to experiment, and have fun with the different voices I can do.

Additional Skills

Alot of Varied performances and work from singing to musical theatre [ singing the time warp]to physical Theatre to stand up comedy,to naturalistic style acting - media acting [some college radio play's]. I tend to physicalise a character in order to get the voice, and understand that placing
the mouth in certain posistions helps achieve the accent.
the attitude,. Over College and University I learned that
breath control, clarity, pronunciation, recieved pronunciation,pace, relaxation, and emphasis are some of the things needed in order to deliver a CLEAR represenation of a character.

It started with WWF as a kid. Over the top delivery [ vince mcmahon ripping into wrestlemania] Michael Buffer - master of ceromonies gives it the big without really raising his voice - fantastic. Brad Douriff,Jack Nicholsen, Jim Carrey,David Patrick Kelly, all great at pulling off the odd, sinister,daft character. Morgan freeman tells the story - my voice is more of the young guy telling a story as opposed to the old man, because A.I'm 23,and B. My voice is tenor as opposed to barritone.
More recently 'Family guy'has been a good influence, but many of my voices come from alot of corny Movies and funny characters plus Chris Rock and Bill Hicks - so this has influenced my comedy style delivery.
