My Voice Experience
While in high school I did public announcements at our annual school fair. Someone heard me and hired me to do a mock 1950's radio program for a '50s themed shoe store in town.
Immediately out of high school I met the general manager of a small AM radio station. When he heard me record a speech for the VFW, he offered me an on-air job for the summer before leaving for college. He spent alot of time with me, training me on the power of my voice.
Ten years ago, I did a voice over for a promotional video for the non-profit cancer center where I worked at the time. When the video was shown to the Board of Directors, the first question asked was: "Whose voice was that?" Though it wasn't my primary job at the time, I enjoyed the work and felt successful at it.
Until recently, I had served as a Catholic priest for a number of years, so used my voice in reading and preaching so that people would be engaged. I've always gotten compliments on the tone and pace of my voice.
Since college, I've used various voices and accents to fool friends on the phone. Of course, with the advent of caller ID, the fun is now gone. So, perhaps if I can find a job to use my voice for, life might be fun again!
My Training
Though I haven't been formally trained in using my voice, I took a course in seminary that taught us how to read with a certain cadence and rhythm that is soothing and helpful for the listener. Also, my GM at the radio station helped me with my voice, though it was informal training.
